Money Isn't Everything

Job satisfaction is an important part of choosing and keeping a career, but you can't ignore salary, either. Just because a job makes a lot of money does not mean you will enjoy it or be good at it, but just how much you can expect to make at a particular occupation is a major consideration.

Sales Director
According to CNN Money, sales directors make some of the highest salaries in the United States, with a median annual salary of $140,000 per year and a top-end wage of $239,000. Besides making sales, they also get paid for recruiting and mentoring others.

Actuaries
Actuaries top the list of the best jobs in the country in 2010, according to the Wall Street Journal, which measures not only salary but also stress, environment and employment outlook. Actuaries analyze data and estimate probability and cost for businesses and insurance companies. They make a median salary of $85,000 per year, $161,000 at the top level.

Psychiatrists
CNBC lists psychiatrist, those doctors of the mind, as the tenth highest-paying job of 2010, with an annual average salary of $163,660.

Software Engineer
Software engineers also make the top ten of the Wall Street Journal's best jobs, in the number two spot. The high end of software engineering salaries is $129,000, with a median salary of $85,000.

Family and General Practitioners
Doctors and others in the healthcare industry tend to dominate the highest-paying jobs. Family and general practitioners are among the highest-paid doctors, with an annual average salary of $168,550.

Bank Officer
Bank officers, high-ranking bank employees who manage all aspects of retail banking and who have the legal right to sign documents on the bank's behalf, have both one of the highest-paying jobs and one of the best overall in terms of physical demands, stress and outlook. You'll have to work you way up, but bank officers can make as much as $$171,000.

Anesthesiologist
According to Forbes, anesthesiologists make even more than family and general practice physicians. Indeed, they earn more than almost any other job in the medical profession at an annual salary of $211,750.

Pharmacist
Pharmacists earn a surprisingly-high salary without having to spend long hours on call or standing on their feet in the operating room. The Wall Street Journal lists a top-level pharmacist salary at $131,00, with a median annual salary of $106,000.

Internist
Internists, medical doctors who specialize in many kinds of adult medicine, make the CNBC list of the highest-paying jobs at number six. Internists earn an annual average salary of $183,990.

Surgeon
The top dogs in terms of wages are surgeons. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons can make $210,710, while surgeons in general can earn $219,770, according to Forbes.
