Top Ten Children's Books

Sam Landers
From the works of Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl to the Harry Potter series, children's books can fill young minds with wonder and excitement. Amazing new worlds can open up for kids of all ages just by reading. Here is a list of my top ten books for children from five to seventy-five years old. Enjoy!!

10. The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis.

At number ten is the tale of Peter, Susan, Lucy and Edmund. Their journey to the magical land of Narnia where they meet Aslan the Lion, and fight the evil Witch and her army is a classic not to be missed.

9. Alice In Wonderland - Lewis Carroll.

Alice In Wonderland is another classic involving a child visiting another world. This crazy trip to a land of invisible cats, living playing cards and the Mad Hatter will delight young readers time and time again.

8. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl's classic tale takes you on a magical mystery tour of a chocolate factory gone mad. Join Charlie and Mr. Wonka as they explore chocolate heaven in this book that is so enjoyed it was made into a movie not once, but twice!

7. How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Dr. Seuss.

This Christmas classic by Dr. Seuss is as fresh today as it ever was. The story of The Grinch and The Whos from Whoville is a masterpiece of rhyme and fun which will be read by many for years to come.

6. Matilda - Roald Dahl.

This masterpiece by Roald Dahl is a delight for kids and adults alike. The story of Matilda Wormwood, a girl who uses her intellect and telekinetic powers to help her kind teacher Miss Honey and punish the mean people in her life such as her parents and her evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull, is not to be missed. Few children's books contain this much magic, humor and enjoyment in their pages.

5. Gulliver's Travels - Jonathan Swift.

The journey of Gulliver, during which he meets giants, tiny little people the size of toothpicks, talking horses and other strange people is an amazing feat of writing by Jonathan Swift. Even today the book stands tall; it's author's imagination impacting the reader as strongly as ever. Only a Yahoo could forget the magical lands such as Liliput that Gulliver visited after reading this book.

4. Green Eggs & Ham - Dr. Seuss.

Another of Dr. Seuss' masterpiece children's books. This silly and irrelevant rhyming story is as funny now as ever. This will remain a classic for years to come, if not forever.

3. The Dangerous Book For Boys- Conn & Hal Iggulden.

The Daring Book For Girls - Andrea Buchanan & Miriam Peskowitz.

These books are full of fun and interesting things for kids to do with their parents. Two great bonding tools, these books can make any and every day special. Highly recommended.

2. The Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling.

When eleven year old Harry Potter discovered that he was a wizard, his world and ours would never be the same again. The seven book epic was a success unlike anything else in recent history, a magical masterpiece of genius that kept us fans guessing until the very end. It's all over now except for the rereading - or is it? With three more movies and The Tales Of Beetle The Bard still to come, Pottermania is far from dead. Enjoy the magic again today!!

1. James & The Giant Peach - Roald Dahl.

The greatest children's book of all time? For me it has to be Roald Dahl's work of genius James & The Giant Peach. This book is full of magic and wonder plus giant fruit and insects. Join James, Miss Spider, Earthworm, The Centipede and company as they travel in a massive peach from somewhere in England to New York City. A truly wonderful book.

These books and others like them will live on forever in the minds of those who have read them. One thing is certain; all of these children's books amongst others, will be discovered time and time again by generations to come.
