Top Ten Comedy Movies of 2000 - 2009

Larry Gonzalez
Comedy like so many things in our lives is subjective. What is funny to some can be ridiculous to others. So saying, "These are the top comedy movies of the decade" is simply one person's point of view. Although there are so many funny movies out there we can't make a top ten list with all of them and based on my mood which changes regularly these are my best comedy movie recommendations for the 2000 decade as of this moment.

2000 taught us how to seduce women with The Ladies Man starring Tim Meadows of SNL fame. Tim plays Leon Phelps a radio talk show host who gives advice about love and seduction. After getting fired for going to far with his explicit advice he embarks on a journey in search of a rich mistress who wants to take care of him. Unfortunately for him, Leon has forgotten her name. Unknown to Leon he is also being chased by the husbands of the women he's conquered. Will Ferrell and Lee Evans, play Lance and Barney respectively whose wives have fallen prey to Leon's charm and lead a group of men who will stop at nothing to get revenge. Also starring Billy Dee Williams, Tiffani Amber Thiessen and Karyn Parsons.

2001 takes me overseas to Hong Kong for a nice game of Shaolin Soccer starring Stephen Chow who also happened to co-write and co-direct. A modern day down and out monk who collects cans and does odd jobs for money goes about his daily routines when he comes across a down and out soccer coach who is amazed with Sing's kicking abilities. Sing realizes that he and his colleagues, other monks who are also struggling to make money, can form a team thereby winning the million dollar prize. Sing's love interest is an "ugly-duckling" pastry chef who just happens to be a Shaolin master herself.

2002 shows us that kung fu is back with Kung Pow! Enter the Fist starring Steve Oedekerk who wrote and directed. This movie spoofs karate movies by using the 1976 film called Savage Killers. With precision editing Oedekerk who plays "The Chosen One" puts himself into the film as a revenge seeking kung fu master. His nemesis is "Master Betty" formerly known as "Master Pain" who is responsible for the death of his parents. Along the way, the Chosen One battles the evil Cow in a Matrix style fight scene and the ridiculous dubbing makes this movie silly entertainment.

2003 lets us get Fo'rizzle! As Brad Gluckman played by Jamie Kennedy would say in Malibu's Most Wanted. Son of a congressman who's played by Ryan O'Neal and his wife Bo Derek, Brad (B-Rad) fancies himself the best rapper in Malibu. The problem? He's rich, white and thinks himself black. B-Rad is trying to launch his rap career but his antics are interfering with his father's attempt to run for the Governorship of California. Congressman Gluckman's campaign manager gets tired of fixing his son's embarrassing mistakes so he hires two black stage actors to play "gangstas" to kidnap "B-Rad" in an attempt to scare him white. Unfortunately B-Rad discovers the plan and decides to give them a taste of their own medicine but then all three are kidnapped by real "gangstas" who want money. B-Rad still believing it's not real puts himself in dangerous situations with tons of laughs.

2004 shows me how nerds can triumph in Napoleon Dynamite. Jon Heder stars as Napoleon, a social misfit who lives with an odd family. His grandmother is a Llama loving, ATV rider and his older brother is an internet geek. Napoleon makes friends with new student Pedro who decides to run for class president so he can score with the chicks. Vote For Pedro!

2005 brings back Stephen Chow in the quirky cartoonish style Kung Fu Hustle. Set in China apparently around the mid 40's a homeless wanna-be gangster Sing played by Chow and his dim-witted friend try to join the famous Axe Gang who have terrorized the community. For his initiation, Sing must kill the landlords of Pig Sty Alley, who unknowingly to everyone is run by two kung fu masters who have vowed to never fight again after the death of their son. When the Axe Gang leader is injured an army is sent to seek revenge but they are thwarted by several masters who have made Pig Sty Alley their home.

2006 made me think twice about eating fast food when i saw Clerks II. This movie follows Dante played by Brian O'Halloran and Randall played by Jeff Anderson who previously worked at the Quick Stop in the original Clerks. Unfortunately for them an unattended coffee pot burns it down so they are forced to seek employment at Mooby's which is run by Dante's ex-girlfriend Becky (Rosario Dawson). Dante, who is now engaged and leaving town in a few days is torn between his new flame and his boss. We also see the return of Jay and Silent Bob played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, respectively who lost their "drug dealing corner" outside the Quick Stop and have now set up shop at Mooby's.

2007 featured an All-Star cast with the release of Wild Hogs. John Travolta, William H. Macy, Tim Allen and Martin Lawrence star as middle-aged men who decide to take a cross country road trip on their motorcycles to see if they can recapture their lost youth. Unfortunately for them they cross the path of the Del Fuegos, a real hard core biker gang that hates "posers" and decides to make an example out of them. The Wild Hogs hide out in a small town which takes the brunt of the abuse so they realize it's up to them to defend the small town and perhaps die trying.

2008 surprised me when I started seeing dead people in Ghost Town starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni. Gervais plays a dentist by the name of Bertram Pincus who's less than cordial and just plain rude because he speaks what he thinks without regard of people's feelings. He then finds himself able to speak to the dead who need to make things right before they can move on, Frank Herlihy (Kinnear) who recently died finds Bertram and forces him to help stop the wedding of his wife Gwen to a dull and boring Richard played by Billy Campbell. Pincus does what he can to thwart the nuptials and grows to love Gwen thereby adding another hiccup in his life.

2009 showed me how funny it is to be ugly. The Ugly Truth starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl who play Mike Chadway and Abby Richter, she's a TV producer and he's a male chauvinist TV personality giving guys advice on his truth about women. Abby hates him but her boss decides to bring him on board to boost the ratings. Mike and Abby become friends and he decides to help her get a man but in doing so he falls for her quirkiness and regrets teaching her how to get a man.
