Top Ten Comedy Movies for Mother's Day 2010

What's not to like about a movie when you're a mom and welcome every opportunity to kick back and enjoy a good laugh? Give your mother copies of these movies, pop some popcorn in the microwave and let her get lost in a world of comedy! So in no particular order, here are some grand movies to tickle Mother's funny bone on her special day.

Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) You can't go wrong for Mother's Day with this classic comedy starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. Ball is Helen North Beardsley, a widow with eight children, who marries Frank Beardsley, a widower with 10 children. Getting a house big enough for them all is just the beginning-after all, combining two families into one is no easy task. And of course the "Ours" comes into play, when Helen discovers there will be a new addition to the family! The 2005 version of the movie starred Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)Sally Field is mom Miranda Hilliard in this movie and Robin Williams plays dad Daniel Hilliard, an out of work actor. But after their divorce, Daddy, who gets visitation with the kids just once a week, poses as Mrs. Doubtfire, a housekeeper, in order to get closer to his children. Donning a wig, make-up and bodysuit, Mrs. Doubtfire is a hit with both mom and kids, proving that he/she is indeed needed. Of course, things don't work out as planned, but all the moms watching will want a Mrs. Doubtfire to help out around the house.

Mermaids (1990) Cher takes on the role of Rachel Flax, a mother in this quirky movie, who often pulls up stakes when her romances fail, much to the chagrin of 16-year-old Charlotte, who helps watch after her little sister. Yet Charlotte has dreams and desires of her own, planning to become a nun--but falls in love with a mild-mannered church employee instead. Is Cher a cool mother? Ask your mother!

Matilda (1996) What mother wouldn't want a sweet daughter like Matilda, who just happens to be a genius? Zinnia Wormwood, her mother, that's who. Matilda, at six-and-a-half, is bright, loves books and just doesn't fit in with the rest of the family. Her parents, played by Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman don't understand why Matilda wants to go to school, but off she goes, taking on the menacing principal, Miss Trunchbull. She finds a friend in Miss Honey, her teacher, who is also Miss Trunchbull's niece. Mommy will love watching this movie with the little kids, but even the older ones will get wrapped up in the story.

Polish Wedding (1998) Mom Jadzia Pzoniak rules the roost in this family, including five children and husband Bolek. Even though her marriage is good, Jadzia is carrying on a long-term affair with Roman, while Bolek, who always has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, bakes bread in a bakery. But Jadzia can't control everything, at least not after daughter Hala becomes pregnant by the cop next door. Mom will want to watch this movie more than once!

Claudine (1974) Ok, it might not really be a comedy, but this movie is just so darn cool and Mother won't soon forget Diahann Carroll as Claudine Price, a welfare mother raising six children. Claudine works as a maid and gets romantically involved with Roop (James Earl Jones), a garbage collector. The couple don't want to marry because Claudine would lose the welfare money she needs to support the children. Other complications arise with the children, who are wary of Roop.

Moonstruck (1987) Olympia Dukakis is sardonic Rose Castorini , the mother of Loretta Castorini (Cher), a widow who considers marrying her safe, stable middle-aged fiancé, Johnny, although she can't get his moody and passionate brother out of her mind. When Loretta tells Rose she's not in love with him, Rose replies with motherly wisdom: "Good. When you love them they drive you crazy, 'cause they know they can."

Corrina, Corrina (1994) This movie is a charming heartbreaker, but also a chance for Mom to teacher her children about love and racial tolerance. Ray Liotta is Manny Singer, a recent widower, who doesn't quite know how to deal with his young daughter, Molly, who has become quite and withdrawn since her mother died. He hires Corrina Washington (Whoopie Goldberg) to look after Molly and to keep house, and although Molly maintains her silence, the eclectic and sassy Corrina delights Molly and soon coaxes her out of her shell.

Never Too Late (1965) In this hilarious movie Maureen O'Sullivan plays Edith Lambert, a fifty-something woman who learns she's having a baby. Edith is thrilled, but not hubby Harry (played by Paul Ford), who is happy with things just the way they are. The household is already shaken up a bit with the couple's daughter and son-in-law living with them. In fact, daughter Kate resents having to do the housework that her pregnant mother can no longer do, and she wants a baby of her own to get out of it. This movie will have mom rolling in the floor with laughter-and she'll most likely be happy to not be in Edith Lambert's situation.

One Fine Day (1996) Can you say George Clooney? This one is bound to be a hit with mom, who might want to trade places with Michelle Pfeiffer for awhile. Pfeiffer portrays Melanie Parker, an architect and the mother of Sammy. Clooney is Jack Taylor, dad to Maggie. A mix-up causes the children to miss school field trips, throwing both parents into a whirlwind of turmoil as they both try to keep their jobs and take care of the kids. Is romance in the air after such a crazy, zany day?
