Top Ten Common Gardening Mistakes to Avoid

Sammy Bones
Whether you are wanting a flower garden or a vegetable garden, gardening can be a pleasant experience if you avoid these ten gardening mistakes. The first mistake that people commonly make is to plant a garden without preparing the soil. You don't have to go crazy and spend a lot of time and money preparing, but clearing the ground and making sure that there are no weeds, roots, or other objects in your garden will ensure that you have a nice start.

The number 2 mistake people make when gardening is that people don't put any fresh top soil or potting soil down. You should put some fresh top soil or potting soil to mix with your regular soil to help your new garden get a proper start.

Common mistake number three is not tilling your soil before you plant. This is part of the preparing process to ensure that the roots have a nice bed to seat themselves in. Tilling is quicker with a powered tiller, but it can also be done with hand tools depending on the size of your garden and your personal time and strength level because it can be a physically draining thing to do by hand. Since you have already put some new top soil or potting soil down, the new soil will be tilled in and mixed nicely with your old soil.

The 4th gardening mistake is buying plants or seeds that are not suited for the region or area you are planting in. If your garden is mostly in the shade, then you will need plants that like the shade.

The 5th most common mistake with gardens is not using Miracle Grow when you water. Miracle Grow is worth its weight in gold when it comes to gardens. If you want big beautiful plants with large flowers or large vegetables, then Miracle Grow is a must.

Not watering your garden enough is the number 6 most common mistake people make. Somehow, the believe that watering your plants too much is worse than not watering enough. This is simply not true. If you water too much is can hurt some plants a little, but most of the time they can handle more water. Look at it like this; after it rains for 3 or 4 days straight, your plants are all big and green, your grass needs cut and all the trees look healthy. So this shows that you should water more if there is no rain.

Thinking of number 6 brings me to the number 7 most common gardening mistake. The mistake is deciding not to water because you think it might rain. Many times it does not rain and then you missed a watering. Water anyway, the plants will like the extra water if it does rain. Plus, there is no Miracle Grow in the rain.

Number 7 most common gardening mistake is not using bug control. There are always bugs and I recommend Seven spray. You don't have to use it all the time, but once in a while should be a big help.

The number 8 mistake is for flower gardens especially, which is not dead heading the buds or flowers that have died. You must take off the old flower tops that have died to make room for new flowers to appear. This will make your flower garden bigger with more color.

The 9th most common gardening mistake is not putting up a small 18" to 24" fence around your garden to keep out rabbits and other animals.

The 10th most common gardening mistake is not letting children or others be involved with your garden. I understand that people take a garden seriously and personally, but if you share your garden with others, it will be way more rewarding and enjoyable. Teach the children about it, cut your flowers and put them in your house, give some of your vegetables to other family members or neighbors. You will be rewarded with friendship, love and kindness in return.
