Top Ten Considerations for a Destination Wedding

Christine Bude Nyholm
Destination weddings are a growing trend for couples who want to combine a getaway with their nuptials. The weddings require organization and planning to put together, along with the ability to trust the remote experts to do their jobs without your continual presence.

Destination weddings are usually smaller, more intimate affairs than weddings planned closer to home. The guest list is typically smaller and reserved for friends and family members closest to the family. Casual acquaintances and co workers are less likely to expect a wedding invitation to a wedding at a far off locale, so planning a destination is a great way to graciously keep the guest list small.

The bride and groom may be disappointed, however, when not everyone that they have invited, and would l.like to be at their special event, is able to attend the destination wedding. Friends and family members may not have the funds or vacation time available to make the trip to your destination. The bridal couple should exhibit understanding about the personal time and finances of others.

There are many advantages for the bride and groom in a destination wedding. Hopefully all details will be taken care of before their arrival, so once they get to the destination, they can confirm the details with the wedding planners and relax. Couples can combine the wedding and honeymoon, often honeymooning in the same location as the wedding, which can eliminate the stress of additional traveling.

The bride and groom can enjoy leisurely visits with their guests, who will probably stay over for a few days. The the couple doesn't mind sharing part of their honeymoon with friends and family members, this can be an advantage.

Following are the Top Ten Considerations When Choosing a Perfect Destination Wedding Spot, adapted from the "Everything Destination Wedding Book," written by Shelly Hagen and published by Adams Media.

1. The Destination Itself. The destination, or resort, should be classy enough for a wedding. The destinations should be a place and the couple would love to spend a week or two.

2. Cost. The destination should be affordable for the bride and groom, as well as the invited guests.

3. Accommodations: Consider how many guests are likely to attend and make sure that there are enough rooms and facilities to hold them.

4. Season: When traveling to a remote locate, verify that the climate will be pleasant.

5. Deals: Ask about lodging specials for the guests. Many resorts will offers free lodging along with a ceremony.

6. Adventure. The destination should have attractions that the guests will find interesting.

7. Length of travel and vacation time: Not everybody will be able to attend. If there are elderly family members, they not be able to make the trip. Guests may not have enough vacation time, or they may have other plans for their vacation time.

8. Your nerves: A lot of arrangements will be made over the phone or the Internet. You may not even see the wedding site until shortly before the wedding.

9. Surroundings: Choose a location that others will find interesting to travel to for happier guests.

10. Assistance: Many resorts have wedding coordinators on the premises. This amenity will be a great help to the bride and groom.

Planning a destination wedding, with the assistance of a qualified wedding coordinator at a location that you will love can be a great joy to the couple. The successful destination wedding offers the opportunity for a unique and memorable experience for the bride, groom, family members and friends. The event, which takes place over the course of days, instead of hours, gives the guests of honor and change to experience an extended time of pleasure. The destination wedding should be fun for everyone.
