Top Ten Country Christmas Songs

Joe Chandler
Christmas is my favorite time of year. The music fills my heart with joy and heartfelt memories of family and friends. Country music is part of the fabric of America and its performers have added their touch to the long list of Christmas Songs. From John Denver and Johnny Cash to Alabama, the songs they shared with us will forever be part of the Christmas Season. My list of Country Christmas Songs is long and it was hard to decide on which ten made the cut. I am sharing them with the hope you enjoy them is much as I have over the years.

The number one song on my list is a little silly but puts the icing on the cake. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, by Elmo and Patsy always puts a smile on my face and I cannot help but sing along. Who would have thought a song, that depicts a horrible scene, would be so funny. In contrast, I'll be Home for Christmas has to be number two on the list. Many country singers have lent their voice to the song but the rendition by Raschal Flatts is by far the best. Number three is a recent addition to the list, Mary Did You Know. This song just gives me goose bumps and makes me feel thankful for what the Lord has done.

Continuing with the beautiful songs that touch the heart, number four, The Angels Cried by Alan Jackson and Allison Krauss, touches the scene of the mood of that Christmas Morning so long ago. The heavens rejoiced as the Savior was born. The reason for the season touches each of us in a different way and sometimes we must remember what is important. Lorrie Morgan captured the essence of our favorite things about Christmas, in her song My Favorite Things.

One of my favorite things is to laugh and sing to music. Ray Stevens has a knack for creating a song that is funny, light, and almost silly. His song Santa Claus is Watching You caught me by surprise the first time I saw it and I laughed for hours. I think it will be one of your favorites too. But who can forget when Jeff Foxworthy released his hilarious version of the Redneck Twelve Days of Christmas. I want five flannel shirts for Christmas.

Deep heartfelt country music is embodied in the voice of Johnny Cash. Therefore, his version of the Little Drummer Boy is a must in any list of Christmas Songs. Johnny Cash's deep voice adds a texture to the song that makes it truly unique. Uniqueness is not uncommon in country music; take Alabama's Christmas in Dixie as an example. The song tried to capture the celebration of Christmas in the South and its unique traditions. Finally, the song that brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it is by Newsong, Christmas Shoes. This song is the perfect song to round out my list of Country Christmas Songs.

The list of Country Christmas songs is endless, but these are my favorite. May your Holiday be filled with Joy and Excitement enhanced by the homespun joy of country music.
