Princess School 101: Proper Princess Behavior

Heather Bernard
In honor of Disney's newest release, A Princess and a Frog, we pay tribute to one of Disney's long tradition of great princess movies. Disney has provided a wealth of information about these princesses through their tales about their long journeys to right a wrong, reclaim a throne, or to reunite with their true loves. Here is a sample of the princess tales that Disney has provided over the years.

1.) Aladdin-Jasmine- One of the bolder princesses,. she is both strong and intelligent. She would not allow herself to be bullied by evil nemesis Jafar into marrying a man that she did not love. She does not want to be pampered and sheltered from the world at large, she wants to be part of it. Jasmine is able to look beyond Aladdin's low station in life and see his heart of gold. This princess is witty, strong and beautiful. A great picture of all a princess should be.

2.) Cinderella-Cinderella- This is one of the classics and is a must have. This tale of a young maiden held back by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters who is able to meet and marry her prince thanks to her fairy godmother. Cinderella shows what a princess is a princess no matter what she wears and how it is necessary to have a heart of gold.

3.) Snow white-Snow White- Another classic about a princess who is deprived of her castle because of her wicked stepmother. Snow white is the perfect example of a girl who is flexible and not opposed to hard work. This princess befriends the seven dwarves and is eventually rescued by the kiss of her prince. This movie is an example of how you can't keep a good princess down.

4.) The Little Mermaid- Ariel- This Mermaid princess is a rebel with a cause as she attempts to learn all she can about the world outside of the sea. Her father the king wants to protect her and refuses for her to have any contact with the outer world. She goes to the Ursula the sea witch and is allowed to spend time with her prince. This brave and plucky redhead is able to reestablish her father's kingdom and marry her prince.

6.) Little Mermaid II: return to the Sea-Melody- This is a continuation of the first Little Mermaid as Ariel's daughter longs for the life her mother left behind. Melody is given the option of becoming a mermaid by Morgana the sea witch. Melody unwisely chooses this option which involves stealing her grandfather's trident. In the end the sea witch is defeated and Melody chooses to tear down the wall between the sea and her home. Melody is a great example of how a princess attempts to unify people and bring them together.

7.)Sleeping beauty- Aurora- This princess was one of the last that was produced by Walt Disney himself. This wonderful princess is cursed when she is born by a bitter fairy that she will die when she touches a spinning needle. Her parents attempt to shelter her so she is taken away to live with three good fairies. Aurora grows into a lovely young woman, meets and falls in love with the prince. As fate would have it she ends up being entranced by Maleficent into touching a spinning needle and must be awoken by the prince's kiss. Aurora is a great example of how a princess is always a princess no matter the conditions she is living in.

8.)Lion King II- Kiara. This tough little lion princess faces her own challenges as she falls in love with one of the outsiders(a pack that was loyal to one of her father's enemies, Scar). Kiara must help Simba understand that Kovu(her love interest) has changed and is nothing like Scar. Kiara exemplifies that a good princess forgives and is quick to make peace.

9.)Pocahontas- Pocahontas- This Native American princess shows that she is strong, wise, and is fair minded. She carefully considers her marital choices and decides she will not chose the safe path , she will chose the adventure of marrying a man she loves. Pocahontas proves her strength as she stands up to her father for the unfair death sentence that John Smith has been sentenced to. Pocahontas proves that a princess is fair-minded and stands up for justice.

10.)Enchanted-Giselle- One of the most delightful updates of the princess story. The combination of animated and live action made this movie thrilling and hilarious to watch. This princess was able to fight the attempts on her life by her fiancée's stepmother while still fulfilling her role as the prince's fiancée. This princess is witty, strong, and unquestionably kind as she waits for her prince. Even though she doesn't end up marrying her animated prince it is obvious she marries her real life one.

Honorary mention: Mulan, and Belle. It was difficult to narrow down who qualified as an official princess and so I was forced to add the stipulation that she must be in love with a prince or must hold the title of princess. (Enchanted barely made it onto the list)
