Here is my choice for the top ten must see foreign dramas of all time. Do you agree with these choices?
1. Munich (2005). This dramatic film is based on a true story. It follows a group of assassins who set out to kill those responsible for the deaths of the Israelis at the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany. The drama follows the life of Avner (Eric Bana) as he goes from a family man to lead this group into attack. Soon, the group begin to question whether they are really killing those responsible, or if these individuals were even part of the plan to kill the Israelis at the games. This psychologically disturbs them, and when the mission is over, Avner returns home to his wife, but he is not the same.
2. Australia (2008). Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star in this romantic drama set in Australia. A wife goes to seek her husband, who has been in Australia too long taking care of a ranch they own there. When she arrives, she finds out that her husband has been murdered. Believing that her employees are no longer on her side, she fires them. Now, she must hire someone to get her cattle to market. Enter the Drover (Hugh Jackman). The screen heats up as the two disagree about everything except for their ultimate purpose.
3. Casino Royale (2006). Of course, a spy thriller had to enter the realm of most dramatic movies of all time. Casino Royale is my favorite of the James Bond movies, mainly because I enjoy a good casino myself. I also prefer Daniel Craig over the other James Bonds. He just seems different and has more depth to him. James Bond is sent to spy on a terrorist by the MI6 agency. However, he ends up going on his own to find out the truth, with the MI6 agency sending someone to watch him, Vesper Lynd. You can imagine that the two fall for each other during the adventure in this foreign drama set in Madagascar and the Bahamas.
4. Children of Men (2006). In the future, the human race is no longer able to reproduce. The environment has been destroyed, and terrorists are everywhere. This foreign drama takes place in the United Kingdom. Clive Owen and Julianne Moore star as a divorced couple who seek to help a pregnant African woman seek refuge to save her baby. The movie is very innovative, and incredibly realistic. It shows a harsh reality, and is a must see future set drama.
5. Valkyrie (2008). Tom Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a key plotter to take down Adolf Hitler. Int his drama film set in a foreign country, the movie portrays Nazi Germany in World War II. Operation Valkyrie is the plan to kill Hitler and gain control of the country. This dramatic film is based on a true story.
6. Slumdog Millionaire (2008). A boy in Mumbai gets to go on a game show with a chance to win a million dollars. He has to answer a series of questions. Somehow, he gets them all right. How did he do it? They think he cheated. This movies shows his life, and shows how he obtained the knowledge needed for each question through events that happened to him.
7. Medicine Man (1992). Sean Connery is a doctor in the Brazilian rain forest who finds a cure for cancer. However, the one place in the world that has the cure is about to be bulldozed, and the cure will be lost forever. Connery has the last of the drug, and must decide whether to use it for one person who needs it then and there, or to preserve it for research to hopefully replicate it in the lab. What a foreign drama!
8. Alive (1993). What would you really do if you were stranded in the Andes after your plane crashed? Would you seriously consider eating the dead bodies of your friends to survive? That is what these men had to do. This foreign drama is based on the true story of a Rugby team traveling from Uruguay to Chile in 1972. The surviving persons must eat the meat from the bodies to stay alive. Then, a few of them attempt to cross the Andes to go get help. Will they survive? How will they live with themselves afterwards if they do survive?
9. Babel (2006). Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are husband and wife, traveling in Morocco. Two young children end up with a rifle and accidentally shoot the wife, who is traveling on a tourist bus. The incident is believed to be a terrorist incident, so the couple have many troubles getting a doctor to come to her to treat her. She can't be moved anymore, once they get her somewhere safe in a village. Don't miss this foreign country drama.
10. Titanic (1997). Rose (Kate Winslet) is on board the Titanic, a ship bound for America from England. She is going to America with her fiance' to get married. Onboard, she meets Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has won a place on the ship from a bet. The two fall for each other, as Rose no longer can stand her life and her controlling fiance'. The problem is, her fiance' isn't about to give up that easily. When the ship hits and iceburg and begins to sink, Rose must decide on Jack Dawson, or her fiance'. Who will it be? Will any of them survive?
What are your favorite foreign country dramas?
