Top Ten Freelance Writing Job Sites

Steve Thompson
Freelance writers are coming out of the woodwork and competition is fierce. Having a website and promoting your writing skills is a great first start, but sometimes you need extra resources to find work. That is why the plethora of freelance writing job sites on the Internet are invaluable to struggling freelance writers. Following is a list of my top ten.

Freelance Writing Job Site #1: AllFreelanceWork.com

Not only does AllFreelanceWork.com have listings for available freelance writing jobs, but it also features specific freelance writers and delivers articles related to your specific craft. It's a great reference if you're in need of work or a little motivation.

Freelance Writing Job Site #2: Authorlink.Monster.com

Powered by Monster, an excellent job search site, AuthorLink is specifically for writers and offers tons of free job listings (both contractual and employment). You must create an account to apply for/answer job listings, but creating an account is free and you have access to freelance writing jobs in lots of different categories.

Freelance Writing Job Site #3: Jobs.MediaGeneral.com

Media General offers job listings in one of the most diverse number of categories I've ever seen. From advertising to research and development to news to publishing, you can find freelance writing jobs regardless of your skills or background. They also offer some of the higher-paying jobs, so this might be one you want to check out right away.

Freelance Writing Job Site #4: EditorandPublisher.com

EditorandPublisher.com is a little difficult to navigate, but once you start learning how to exact searches, you'll find a large number of jobs available. They also have a very precise search engine that allows you to search for the particular job you want, even according to location.

Freelance Writing Job Site #5: FreelanceWriting.com

If you're looking for an easy-to-browse freelance writing job site, I'd definitely recommend FreelanceWriting.com. You can search for paying jobs, non-paying jobs, low-paying jobs, full-time writing jobs, collaborator requests and writers for speaking engagements.

Freelance Writing Job Site #6: CopyEditorJobs.com

This is one of my favorite freelance writing job sites when I need a quick, easy project to cover me for the rest of the month. CopyEditorJobs.com offers free listings for editorial projects all over the world. I especially like this site because you can find big-name copy editor jobs, such as positions with Penguin Publishing and with the American Bar Association.

Freelance Writing Job Site #7: MediaBistro.com

Geared more toward the editor and/or journalist, MediaBistro.com has full-time and contract writing and editing jobs for freelancers. They also have on-site employment positions available, which might appeal to some freelancers.

Freelance Writing Job Site #8: Sunoasis.com

This is low on my list of freelance writing job sites only because the format is difficult to read and navigate. However, I've found two successfully jobs through this site, so it warrants a mention. The search capabilities are non-existent and some of the links are broken, but you might find a diamond in the rough.

Freelance Writing Job Site #9: WriteJobs.com

As freelance writing job sites go, WriteJobs.com is an excellent resource. However, although it does list great opportunities for writers, the resources are limited and you won't find more than a few dozen opportunities at a time.

Freelance Writing Job Site #10: PoeWar.com/Jobs

This website is a great resource for writers who are looking for more long-term job opportunities. Rather than posting job opportunities on their site, they give links to other websites that host freelance writing jobs. They link to sites such as JournalismJobs.com, Gadball.com, BrassRing.com and Monster.com

Hopefully, at least one of those ten freelance writing job sites will score you a gig, but if not, you can find access to other freelance job sites at WritersWeekly.com.
