Top Ten Gift Ideas for 3 Year Old Boys

Something for Any Three Year Old Boy

Renee Bodkin

Three year old boys are at a great exploratory age. They love playing and they love toys. I can just look around my house to make this top ten list since I am the mommy to three boys who are five years old and under. My boys are active and love transportation, most specifically my three year old. This gift ideas included in this list is a diverse range of toys to meet the wants and needs of any three year old boy! You are sure to find at least one or two fun things on this list that will make your three year old boy smile.

1.Little People A to Z Learning Zoo - The Little People A to Z Learning Zoo was my three year old's favorite gift last Christmas. This is more than just a bunch of animals. It is a play mat with the alphabet on it where they can press any letter and hear the beginning letter of the animal's name or the sound the animal makes. Children can hear the A-B-C song or hear questions about the animals they meet along the way. Fisher Price did an awesome job with this set. As a side note, I believe that most any Little People set is a sure winner with three year olds and they are priced right as well.

2.Take Along Thomas Trains - Thomas the Tank Engine has been a favorite in our house for over three years now. All of my boys love Thomas. Any Thomas set is a hit with a three year old transportation fan. We decided to go with the Take Along collection, which are the smaller die cast trains. They can be purchased either at Target or online. There are loads and loads of trains ranging in price from $4 to about $15. Then there are Play Sets and tracks to go along with them. My boys have had hours and hours of fun playing with these trains.

3.Aquadoodle Sing N' Doodle - This fun activity mat incorporates two activities in one. Your three year old can enjoy music fun singing along with Old MacDonald. The child can also stamp or draw with water and watch the area on the mat dry and the color disappear after 30 seconds. Children can also hear animal songs on the mat. This is a fun activity for children two and up. The Aquadoodle Sing N' Doodle encourages creativity!

4.Art Supplies - Three year old boys love to get messy and creative. Crayons and markers with some quality butcher or construction paper will always be a welcome gift to a three year old. Three year olds also are learning to cut and paste so throw together a little supply box with some child scissors and glue sticks and they'll have a ball. Finger paints are loads of fun as well. Another secret that will be a hit with three year old boys are stickers. They love to make pictures then decorate it with their favorite stickers. Not only do art supplies make the little guys happy, parents welcome them because they encourage creativity and learning!

5.Books - Books are a gift of love for a child of any age. You can't go wrong with the gift of a book. Three year old boys love books about transportation, animals, sports, favorite characters (such as Thomas, Bob the Builder, Superman, Barney, The Wiggles, Disney), as well as classics such as Dr. Seuss.

6.Big Wheel - This is a perfect outside gift for a three year old boy. Boys love things that go and this is perfect for three year olds. The Big Wheel is a classic for both boys and girls. It's a great first ride on toy with pedals. It's low to the ground, which is great too. My son has had loads of fun riding up and down the driveway on his Big Wheel.

7.Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set and Word Whammer Fridge Phonics Set - We started with the Fridge Phonics Magnetic Set in our home and it was an instant favorite for everyone! My three year old was most excited and interested in playing with his letters and singing along. We decided to go for gold and purchased the Word Whammer Fridge Phonics Set for our older son. This was also a hit with all the kids! It's amazing how quickly they learn to string together letters to create words. I recommend either one of these sets or both for the three year old on your shopping list!

8.Lego Duplo Sets - There are a variety of Lego Duplo Sets that are made for children age 2 to 5. They are extra large blocks are easy for little ones to handle. The sets are: Zoo set, Thomas set, and Bob the Builder sets. Three year old boys love to build and these sets are great introductory collections to get them constructing.

9.Mega Bloks Mega Fire Truck - I know I already included building blocks (see above) but the Mega Bloks Mega Fire Truck is such a favorite in our household, I couldn't leave it off of this list for three year olds! This fire truck is big and sturdy and loads of fun to push around. It has a movable ladder / handle. Then comes the blocks. It comes with 40 different sized blocks for your three year old to build to his hearts content. Mega Bloks also has other fun sets though this is my three year old's favorite.
10.Instrumental Music Sets - Three year old boys love making noise, I mean music! There are a number of sets out on the market that would be perfect for the budding musician. Some are more remedial than others but they all accomplish the same goal, to foster a love of music! I found at least 6 different sets all within a decent price range between $20 and $50 that would be perfect for a three year old boy!

Renee - it's been a long time! I googled "gift ideas for 3 year old boys" because my son is about to turn 3 and your article was one of the first ones that came up!

This year (2008), my daughter asked me to research toys for my 3yr old grandson. He is fascinated by construction equipment so there was my theme. Check out my findings on Top Ride On Toys for 3 Year Old Boys. Thanks for your hard work and information!

I'm a grandma, who lives across the country from the grandchildren, and your list is particularly helpful to me since toys change so quickly and the children's interests are not a part of my daily life. I used to just ask "the Mom" for suggestions, but don't find that particularly satisfying--it's sort of like just sending a check... This way, I can read about the toys you like and make a somewhat educated decision. Thanks for your input to my gift-giving needs.

My boys loved the Little People A to Z Learning Zoo also. These are some great suggestions. I actually made a website all about my boys favorite toys. Please check it out at http://3boystoys.com/

Awesome list! And just in time for Christmas. I've been looking for some ideas to buy gifts for my soon to be 3 year old. These are great, and I'll definitely take a few of them. Plus my mom needs a list of things to buy, you know how grandmas like to spoil their grandkids! Thanks so much!
