Top Ten Gift Ideas for Freshwater Fisherman

Gifts for the Fisherman

Mike Hazelwood

1. One of the simplest and most practical gifts that every fervent fisherman would appreciate is a raincoat. He or she will be ecstatic and dry on those days when the thunder rattles the air, and the dark storm clouds roll into the sky. His or her day extended indefinitely with the raincoat, when the fish are biting at his or her favorite fishing hole. The raincoat is an affordable purchase, and a greatly appreciated gift given to any fisherman.

2. Fishermen who enjoy night fishing will appreciate a lantern to light up his life and favorite fishing hole. When I was younger my friend, Mark Crabtree and I would fish the banks of Panther Creek, in Western Kentucky religiously, but only with the help of a lantern to light our path. Unfortunately, our trips would be cut short in those inclement weather conditions when we did not have a lantern, the fact being the kindling for the campfire did not burn well when wet. Also, make sure the fisherman in your life has plenty of lantern fuel to light his way for those long nights on the banks of his or her favorite fishing hole.

3. Your fisherman may be one of those lucky ones catching his weight in fish every time he or she goes fishing, for this type purchase a nice, sharp fillet knife. The fillet knife allows for easy cleaning of his or her catch.

4. I am not sure if you have ever heard the saying about fisherman's luck; "Fisherman's luck is identified at times by a wet butt and a hungry gut." In those times when the bank is less then desirable to set on, a fisherman appreciates a fishermans's chair. The chair easily folds up for storage and transportation, and can found in all colors, shapes and sizes.

5. Every fisherman appreciates a newly stocked tackle box. Some items to purchase to fill up the box are, fishing string, weights, hooks, a stringer, lures for the bass fisherman, and even a scale for weighing his or her prize catch are greatly appreciated. Another item to purchase for the fisherman, a disposable camera to record his or her biggest moments forever.

6. If your fisherman owns a boat, a depth and fish finder will put the biggest smile on their face, and the largest fish across their plate. These new fangled high-tech items can save him or her time and energy, by helping them locate the colossal fish of his or her dreams, and the depth finder will help him or her locate the deepest water on the lake, making their days of fishing much more productive. Watch his eyes light up when he or she opens the box, and watch the fish in the freezer mount up from the newfound luck.

7. During those winter months, when the avid fisherman is dreaming of wetting his line, a box of assorted fishing videos will light up his life. The videos will gently warm up his soul, and get him pumped up for the up and coming fishing season. The fisherman can pop in the tape when the ice and snow is mounting up outside, and drift to those warm and relaxing fishing days of the past. Wonderful winter days will fill with enjoyment as his mind drifts to the lake, catching his favorite type of fish without leaving his lounge chair.

8. Every fisherman would also appreciate issues of Field and Stream or other fishing magazines on the market. Magazines are gifts that will keep on giving! Giving him or her new ideas for catching more fish to fill the freezer up even more.

9. Another simple gift to purchase for the avid fisherman is the Almanac, which comes out at the beginning of every New Year. This will help the fisherman map out the best days for catching the most fish during the year.

10. Lastly, the final gift for the avid fisherman would be a nice classy reel and rod. These items are the bread and butter items for the fisherman, for without these two items they will not catch many fish. You can find the latest fishing rods at Bass Masters, the Mecca for the avid and outgoing outdoorsman.

My wife gave me this funny Toilet Fishing game for my birthday this year. It is pretty funny...you "fish" for these magnetic fish while you do your business. They have them at this website www.PrankPlace.com

This is a great article Mike, I should send it to my family who is not yet used to me being an avid fisher(wo)man. I learned a lot spending a few years in MI and when I can get it scanned, I'll post my prized 18lb. King Salmon catch. But here in Missouri, have to settle for Trout (my other fav), and next learn more about Bass Fishing. Great Work - like your writing Style.
