Top Ten Gift Ideas for Senior Citizens

Anna Swan
The following is a list of Christmas gift ideas for the Senior Citizen on your list, but they are also good suggestions for any time. As we age, living independently becomes more challenging. These suggested gift ideas are all geared toward making impendent living easier. I would also recommend checking with your elderly loved one's Medicaid provider, and inquire about special coverage for items such as electronic lift chairs, electric scooters, wheelchair ramps, and special in-home medical equipment such as walkers, canes, and shower grips and chairs. In some cases your local Area On Aging office or Social Services Agency can also help you with getting independent living items for your elderly loved one. You can find these agencies listed in most telephone directories under the Government heading.

1. For an elderly loved one who lives alone or in an isolated location, a Medical Emergency Notification System such as Life Alert, MedScope, or LifeLine Services is not only a wonderful gift - it could save a life! These devices are designed to be worn by the individual at all times, in either the pendant style or wrist bracelet. In the event the wearer has a medical emergency, such as falling, and is unable to reach the telephone, they can press the big button on the device and emergency medical services will be automatically summoned. These systems cost as low as $14.95 per month, and in some cases the cost my be completely covered by Medicare.

2. Large Button Cell Phone - such as the Jitterbug Cell, and the Jitterbug One Touch. These large button cells make calling easier for the senior citizen, with a lighted display, large buttons, speed dialing, caller ID on a large visual display, and all the functions of a standard cell phone. Price: around $147.00

3. If your elderly loved one has a pet companion, a truly appreciated gift would be pre-paid pet exercising services. Check your local telephone yellow pages for pet exercise services in your loved one's area. These services are especially appreciated during winter months and the heat of the summer when walking a pet may be dangerous for senior citizens.

4. Check with your local Barbers and Hair Dressers, many will do in-home hair grooming for the elderly. You can pre-pay for the service and arrange the in-home appointment for a convenient time and date for your loved one.

5. Call the local landscapers and lawn care professionals in your loved one's area and pre-pay for a season of lawn mowing and general lawn care. This is also a service that is greatly appreciated in extremely hot summer months!

6. Large faced electric wall clock. As we age, our eye sight sometimes diminishes. Digital clocks can be confusing and hard to set. A great gift idea for an elderly loved one would be a large faced electric wall clock. No battery to replace, and easy to see from some distance. Price: around $29.00

7. Designed primarily for the hearing impaired, a flashing light doorbell and flashing light telephone can also benefit an elderly loved one who may not always hear the doorbell or the telephone ring. These devices do require installation, and some knowledge of electrical wiring. Price: around $49.95

8. Large Button Universal TV Remote, as electronics strive to become smaller and smaller, they get increasingly harder for the elderly to use. A large button universal TV remote control can make seeing the numbers and pressing the right buttons so much easier! Price: Around $14.95

9. Lap Tables, such as the ones designed for using a lap top computer. These inexpensive tables can be very handy for the elderly to eat meals on, keep track of things such as the cordless telephone, TV remote, and eye glasses. They have literally thousands of uses, and weigh less than 3 pounds so your loved one will have no trouble pushing and pulling them to and from their chair. Price: around $19.00

10. Zippered clothing with large zipper pulls. As we age, buttons and snaps may become increasingly harder to open and close. You can find large zipper pulls in the craft section of most large department stores. A zipper with a large pull tab makes getting dressed a zip! Price: about $2.99 per large pull

I like the idea of giving the elderly a big button and easy to use cell phone. But the Jitterbug phone is quite pricey; the Just5 Easyphone is a more practical choice. Aside from its affordability, I’ve also known this phone to have the capability to store five pre-programmed numbers, which will be automatically dialed by the phone when its emergency SOS button was pressed in times of crisis.

I am proud that I have a phone and an emergency device at the same time with Just5 mobile phone. Its an emergency device which is a mode of communication in itself. It is easy to use and has very simple features. Check www.just5.com for more information about this phone.

These are some great ideas. I would like to suggest that you consider a Life Story Journal (large print) or a Memory Journal available from www.lifebio.com. LifeBio also has a Memory Gift Box available with a collection of reminiscence and life story products. If adult children or grandchildren want to interview grandma or grandpa, LifeBio provides the perfect questions to help you get started. Also, for that tech-savvy grandparent, you can give them a LifeBio.com Membership to the website so they can answer autobiography questions online.

I strongly agree that a cell phone that is specifically designed for the elderly is one of the finest gifts to provide to the old folks. Obviously, most of the cell phones for seniors nowadays are not only designed to provide them an enhanced convenience when it comes to keeping in touch with their loved ones. This also serves as an emergency response device, which is very important to constantly ensure their safety.

Apart from Jitterbug however, there is still another cell phone for seniors that is very much ideal to give to the seniors. It is the Just5 phone. It is the same phone I gave to my father. The truth is that I would even say that Just5 phone is a far more practical choice than Jitterbug. Just5 phone has more powerful features to boost and it doesn't cause any form of annoyances to the user. As far as I know, Jitterbug does. Based on the reviews I have learned, this already has a numerous unfulfilled customers. I definitely do not want to count my father among those unfu

After reading your article on seniors and good gifts for seniors, I thought it would benefit you to learn about a new product. It is a DVD that is made specifically for seniors. It is called "Night to Remember" and is a 35 minute short film musical with no dialogue, with 10 songs from 1952 and 1953. The DVD comes with a CD of all of the music and is a great and wholesome way for seniors to spend their time in front of the TV. It is really nice because the DVD is entertainment made specifically for them. I haven't seen anything like it so far and my Grandparents LOVE it! Thought you might want to check out the website. it is nighttorememberdvd.com enjoy and happy viewing! Keep up the good writing!

As of May 2009, the Jitterbug cell phone has been recalled due to failing to call 911. I hope the people looking for gifts for senior citizens do their research better than the writer of this article did. While you couldn't have known about the recall when you wrote this article, recommending a cell phone with such preposterous prices for senior citizens was not a good idea. Even in 2009, their rate plans are nothing to shout about, unless you're hollering for help, that is.

I think a great gift for a senior citizen is a collection of old radio shows from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s on CD or DVD. I have a collection that exceeds 65,000 episodes of hundreds of different radio program titles. You can choose from Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Detective, Western and Variety. Go to http://40sradiomysteries.com/ and choose the programs you want for as low as $7 per CD with 25 to 50 hours of audio shows on a single CD
