Top Ten Gift Ideas for the Single Parent

Nicole Humphrey Cook
Parenting is one of the toughest jobs out there. And being a single parent, is twice the work as double parenting. Typically because more often than not, a single parent is trying to be both mother and father to a child, regardless of gender.

A single parent often goes without to ensure their children have what they need. A single parent is usually working long hours trying to make ends meet, having little time leftover for the kids, let alone themselves. Overall, single parenting is a lonely, challenging job that warrants extreme respect, but is often overlooked.

Because their job is so difficult and time consuming, I often feel they need special treatment once in awhile. What better time than Christmas to give a little more attention and thought to the gift you will give to the special single parent on your list.

These ideas will work for either gender, regardless of who has custody.

A Night Out

Single parents often don't have time for themselves. They also find it hard to keep in touch with friends and relatives. Offering them a special evening treat on you, such as dinner and a movie, or just a chance to reconnect with some friends, is one of the most favorable gifts a single parent can receive. Not only are they not spending money on themselves, but they also might enjoy the opportunity to spend some one on one time with a friend, relative or even you.

Family Movie Night

Pick up a few family movies, a box of popcorn, a big blanket and perhaps a pizza and mom will have all she needs for a really nice night with her kids. Some single parents rarely see their children so this would be a most favorable gift. Family time is usually a well deserved gift.

Hire a Maid, Gardner, etc.

This is one of those luxury items that a single parent would never ever purchase for themselves, yet would find to be one of the most useful. Being a single parent, leaves them with very little time for extra activities, between parenting, schedules that must be kept and cleaning. Give them a gift that might just be useful to them, I bet they are ecstatic.

Useful Coupons, Gift Cards and Gift Certificates

Groceries are expensive, as is gas, utilities, and extras. Purchase a gift card or certificate to a local grocery store, gas station, discount chain or anywhere else the single parent frequently shops. Often these gifts are the best for them, because they are able to do more with them. If you don't wish to purchase an actual gift card or certificate, go buy some groceries. Get all the fixings to make several different meals, and even include recipes.

Food Warehouse Memberships

Purchasing a membership to a bulk warehouse such as Sams or Costco for the single mom, might be a good idea if they have several children they are responsible for feeding. Buying in bulk helps to save money, and single parents are always looking for this. Even if the single parent you are purchasing for does not frequently shop at bulk warehouses, this can be a terrific opportunity for them to explore a new shopping venture while saving money.

Family Activity Memberships

Buy the single parent on your list a family membership to the zoo, six flags, art museum, science center, aquarium or anywhere else your town hosts an attraction. This allows the single parent to take their children to these locations much more frequently and not just when they have the extra funds to do it. A typical membership is either seasonal or for a full year. This could be a reoccurring gift.

A Special Mug, T-Shirt, Etc.

You might consider purchasing the single parent a special mug, t-shirt or other item that depicts a single parent with the number of children he/she has. There are several websites that allow you to design your own t-shirt, coffee mug and other merchandise and even exclusively offer items for single parents. A necklace with charms depicting her children or a mother's ring with the children's birthstone might be another option for the single mom.

Appliances To Make Life Easier

Take note of what they single parent is using. Are they using a coffee maker or toaster oven from 1960? You might consider purchasing a new appliance for them that might make life easier. An automatic can opener is an excellent choice for the single mom who might not have someone to help her open things, etc. Think about other appliances through out the house. DVD players, CD players, radios, TV's, game systems, washers and dryers. Don't forget that a really nice USED item is just as good a gift as new when you are replacing something that has outgrown it's usefulness.

A New Outfit

Consider purchasing the single parent a nice new outfit. Perhaps something that coordinates from head to toe. If the recipient wears hats, purchase one to go with the outfit. Even shoes, and belts. Typically a single parent does not have extra finances to purchase nice new clothing, so it is a nice gift. Be sure to include gift receipts in case something doesn't fit or isn't the correct color.

A Personal Indulgence

Does this single parent enjoy a hobby? Perhaps model cars, or scrapbooking? Maybe photography or reading? Purchase something solely for them to enjoy. Even a box of chocolates or some specialty hot chocolate or coffee. These are incredibly wonderful gifts for the single parent, since they are not afforded these indulgences often - they are considered luxuries when you become a single parent.

No matter what gift you choose for the single parent, keep in mind that they cannot afford what they used to afford. Think about the individual person and what they might need. You might even ask them what they need.
