    I remember those cross stitch kits!! I also did a hooked rug kit when I was a kid. It took forever and I remember getting so sick of working with the same color over and over whenever there was a big patch of a single color.

    I don't know if they still have them, but when I was little they had cross-stitch kits for kids. You actually used yarn and instead of fabric there was a plastic with a colored pattern. Those were really fun. Another fun craft for kids is to buy a book of transfer and transfer them onto a t-shirt and let them use fabric paint to color in the image.
