Top Ten Gifts for the Hard to Buy for Teenager

Think Outside of the Mall

Lori Borys
Stop racking your brain for an idea for that moody teen on your list. Here are some suggestions from expensive to not so expensive for parents, grandparents, and siblings, even friends. Most of them don't even require a trip to the mall.

1. Quality leather jacket. They will have it for years as they are slowing down on the growth spurts. Get something clean and classic they can wear with jeans or dress clothes and it will serve them well.

2. Electric Guitar and lessons. If you have a self-conscious teen in need something to pull them out of their shell and make them just that little bit of cool that having a talent does this is the ticket. For a few hundred dollar initial investment you can get a decent enough guitar and amp package. Lessons are a nominal weekly fee and they begin to pay off in only a few weeks. So you get to hear the same Smoke On The Water riff every night really loud and really out of tune but I promise it gets better with time.

3. AAA is not only a great gift for the adults on your list but also for the teens. Along with the safety of being able to call from anywhere anytime and get their car repaired or towed back home they will also get discounts at many local franchises.

4. AAA movie pack. Great for the teen who is dating. They get two movie passes, two sodas and large popcorn, everything you need for a date night. Okay well maybe they will need a ride or gas money but it will definitely lighten the financial burden.

5. Gift certificate to an expensive restaurant. Another great idea for the dating age teen in your life. They like to eat too. They also like to impress their dates. An expensive restaurant is something they wouldn't be able to afford without a little help or saving for months. the car pool lane.

6. A gym membership. Boy or girl it doesn't really matter, everyone can use a little exercise and if you can convince some of their friend's parents to do the same you may be able to use the car pool lane and get a trainer for a group session.

7. Lap top computer. They are going to need one when they go to college anyway. You may as well invest now and take advantage of the sales. It will also let give them some time to familiarize themselves with the smaller key board and charging the battery.

8. Digital camera and rechargeable batteries. Inspire them to mark the moments of their life with pictures. When they leave home you'll enjoy that they are able to share them with you at will and you'll be saving them thousands on developing pictures that didn't come out. The rechargeable batteries are a must for this item otherwise you should just buy them stock in Duracell as well. Digitals work better and longer with the re-chargeable type.

9. Magazine subscription. The joy of this is the subscriptions only last a year so when their tastes change so can their magazine and you'll be set for life as far as the gift giving. Check with them in November to see what they are interested in and knock them off your Christmas list early.

10. Snack basket. Kids are always hungry when they get home from school and they are always looking for snack items while they watch television. Find out what some of their favorites are and make up a basket. Include certificates for movie rentals.

I'd like to thank Ally for weighing in. This particular list was comprised based on the desires of my own teenagers. He loved going to the gym and he wears the leather jacket all the time.

Hi, um, i'm a teenager, and i don't know a single person in their right mind would wear a leather jacket. Trust me the fake "oh thank you i love it" Is what they'll say and the next thing you know its in the back of the wardrobe never to be seen again. Secondly, A gym membership, while being a healthy idea will just provoke self insecurity. They will probably take it as an insult.
