Top Ten Halloween Songs

An Unexpected Blast from the Past

Suzanne Bennett
When I did a little online listening to Halloween songs, I was kind of surprised to find that my favorites came from very specific times in my childhood and teenage years. There were a couple from the late 50s and early 60s when I was between 2 and 4, some from the late 60s when I was a preteen, more from the mid-seventies when I was in high school, and then some from the 80s when I was raising my foster children. Each of these evoke particular memories of time and place that cause them to be part of my Halloween "puzzle"! That is, the little things that come together to make Halloween festive and fun!

Purple People Eater, Sheb Wooley, 1958: A silly song that my Daddy sang with me when we lived in a house that made me feel just like the kids on TV!

Theme From Twilight Zone, 1959: Another childhood favorite. I can still remember hiding behind a chair to watch!

Monster Mash, Bobby "Boris" Pickett, 1962: Just plain silly and great to dance to!

Spooky, Classics IV, 1968: Seemed very exotic to this 11-year-old!

Clap for the Wolfman, Guess Who, 1974: I remember the boys in my class imitating this song. It's fun to clap along and dance to.

Spiders And Snakes, Jim Stafford, 1974: Reminds me of my high school days, just another silly one! I can remember very clearly seeing him sing this when he was a guest on the Sonny & Cher Show, or maybe it was The Smothers Brothers.

Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield, Theme from The Exorcist, 1974: I've just always liked this one. It is chilling and beautiful.

Devil Woman, Cliff Richards, 1976: The year I graduated from high school. Scary lyrics and a good beat!

Devil Went Down To Georgia, Charlie Daniels Band, 1979: Great music! Fun to listen to and scary!

Ghostbusters, Ray Parker Jr., 1984: I had one foster son who loved this movie. We went to see it several times and got it on video as soon as it was available.

Thriller, Michael Jackson, 1984: This was so popular when it was new and Michael Jackson was at the height of his career. It evokes a very creepy, spooky Halloween night! You can just feel the cold fall wind blow!

All of these songs are easily available for free download or on CD collections! I plan to round out my collection before Halloween to have lots of spooky fun! Hope you will too! :)
