Top Ten High School Movies
Movies About High School Antics, High School Fun, Teenage Crushes and Teen Issues
1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). I don't know if anyone could argue against Fast Times at Ridgemont High being the best high school movie ever. You get a little bit of everything in this movie. Someone loses their virginity in this movie. You get two best friends in rivalry over a girl. The movie includes coming of age issues, and depicts real issues that teens face in high school. There are some hot and steamy moments, some reality biting times, and some times when you just realize that it can just suck to be stuck in high school, with peer pressure, lack of money, and having to face the fact that soon you actually have to grow up and get out into the real world.
2. Weird Science (1985). All you guys, I'll bet your first movie on the list was weird science. Why? Because in this movie two teens got to create the perfect woman, Kelly LeBrock. She was on every guy's wish list back in the 80's. This 80's movie is right at the top. Imagine having a computer that can actually create the perfect woman and bring her to life. Right on dudes!
3. The Breakfast Club (1985). Everyone can identify with the movie The Breakfast Club. Each one of us can picture ourselves as being one of the teens in this movie. Does Molly Ringwald remind you of yourself, the good girl? Or do you relate more to the Judd Nelson bad boy? How about the Emilio Estevez jock type? Perhaps the Anthony Michael Hall nerd?
4. The Outsiders (1983). This movie is about two different sides of the tracks, two groups of teenagers in gangs against each other. You witness the battles between the two sides, while some of the Greasers group get caught up in saving some children from a burning barn. One of the Greasers is severely injured. This movie has an incredible song in it, one I will never forget, that is truly inspirational. It's called Stay Gold, and it's about staying true to yourself and what you believe. Some great stars came out of this movie, such as Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise and C. Thomas Howell.
5. Risky Business (1983). Sometimes, you have to say, what the heck, and take some chances. That's the theme of this film. High school can't always be about following the rules, but if you break them, you have to be prepared for the consequences. Lucky for Tom Cruise, everything seems to work out for him in the end. This is definitely Tom Cruise's break out role, the one that makes him unforgettable. Just make sure you watch the scene with him dancing in his underpants!
6. Sixteen Candles (1984). Another great 80's movie and high school movie, Sixteen Candles is about first crushes. Remember back in high school when you had a crush on someone who didn't even know you exist? However, not everyone was as lucky as Molly Ringwald to actually get the person to eventually notice her and like her! Hmph! I love this teen movie, because it's not just about teen issues, but it's also pretty funny. My favorite part is when Long Duck Dong, the foreign exchange student who is staying with Molly Ringwald's grandparents, falls out of the tree onto Jake (Michael Schoeffling), Molly Ringwald's crush, and the two fall to the ground. Long Duck Dong had a serious hangover after all night drinking.
7. Pretty in Pink (1986). Pretty in Pink also stars Molly Ringwald. Okay, girl, you got yourself in three great teen movies! In this movie, a somewhat strange, not so affluent girl deals with her own teen issues, such as having a mother that left her and her father, and her father being depressed and out of work. She struggles to face the fact that a more affluent boy likes her (Andrew McCarthy), but eventually gives into the peer pressure of his rich friends, and decides not to like her anymore. Lucky for her, she's got a great friend, Duckie (Jon Cryer). Will her crush come around, and realize the girl is more important, or will he stick with these so-called friends, who don't really have his best interest at heart?
8. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). We all remember playing hooky from school. Either we just snuck away from school after being dropped off by the bus, or we pretended to be sick and waited for our parents to leave for work. These high school antics are ones we are all familiar with. This is a fun high school movie when you see what ensues when Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) takes the day off. Will he get away with it?
9. Class (1983). Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy make this a great movie, joined with Jacqueline Bisset. In Class, two high school kids attend a prep school in Chicago. Rob Lowe tempts Andrew McCarthy to have his first fling, and so he goes off to the city and meets an older woman. The only problem is, it turns out it's Rob Lowe's married mother! When Andrew joins Rob at his parent's house for the holidays, he discovers the mistake he made. Can their friendship survive something like this?
10. Vision Quest (1985). Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino star in this high school wrestling movie. Matthew Modine falls for the woman who has become a border in his home, renting a room. She realizes it's wrong, but becomes involved with him anyway. We see what teens are willing to go through and sacrifice to do well at a sport and be successful in a relationship. Can everything work out, or are teens doomed to fail?
