Jaws
When you are talking about the greatest horror movies from over the years, it is impossible to create a list without including his movie and the Great White shark that terrorized a small Northeast town. The tension was built up throughout the movie and came crashing down on us when horror fans had a chance to see the entire image of the shark and see how large it really was. There is nothing more frightening than an animal with sharp serrated teeth and hungry for blood. Just ask the millions of people who think about this movie when they wander away from the safety of the beach.
The Thing
This horror movie was the perfect combination of paranoia and pure terror for a group of researchers stuck in the Antarctic. What makes this John Carpenter movie terrifying is that he makes you constantly question who is human and who is not. One of the most intense scenes in this movie is when they are taking blood samples to see which one of them is actually the alien. If you have not spent the time to watch The Thing, you should make the time on a dark and snowy night.
The Exorcist
Even if you do not believe in angels or demons, this horror movie is truly terrifying as you watch what transpires with a young girl. The crab walk scene or when her head completely rotates remains two of the most memorable scenes in this history of horror movies. While there was a remake released of this movie, the original version without a doubt is the one to watch.
Nightmare on Elm Street
If you are looking for one of the more interesting slasher villains to come out of the 1980's horror movies, Freddy Krueger has to be at the top of the list. Krueger who was armed with his witty remarks and deadly glove attacks kids when they were at their weakest, when they slept. Though movies latter in the series became more campy and drifted from the first movie, Nightmare on Elm Street still sets the pace for slasher films while giving us an uneasy feeling when we drift off to sleep.
The Shining
This movie, that takes place in the remote area of the Colorado mountains where we watch a man mentally breakdown and become the villain of the movie. One of the most memorable scenes in horror movies came in the Shining when Jack Nicholson's character sticks his head through a hacked up door. Even if you are not a fan of horror movies, this is one movie that you must watch at some point in your life.
Dawn of the Dead
Countless zombie movies have been created over the years and have offered us different variations, but there is no denying this horror movie. Though Night of the Living Dead is the standard, this sequel takes us to a familiar place, the mall, as we get to see how people interact when under the stress of being cornered by intense eating zombies.
Seven
We all know humans are capable of evil things, but this horror movie does its best to engrave that thought on to our brains. The dark images portrayed in the movie are only enhanced by the environment and how the movie comes full circle with the detective and the psychotic killer.
Alien
The female heroine role is taken up by Sigourney Weaver who leads a crew aboard a space station when they are under attack by an alien species. No one can forget the scene when an alien is ready to hatch and bursts out of the chest of one of the crew members. While the sequel, Aliens, is an overall better movie, there is no denying the impact Alien had on the horror genre.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The original movie that released back in 1974 was a terrifying ride for horror fans that have stuck with us over the years. The image of Leatherface chasing down his victims is the thing nightmares are made of. Tobe Hooper delivers us a raw violence for us to experience and an unforgettable cast of characters in a film that could never be reproduced.
Saw
While the series has gone on longer than some may have liked, there is no denying the impact the first Saw movie had on the horror genre. Two people chained in the room left with decisions to make on who lives and who dies. What makes this horror movie truly mind blowing is the end scene, which will not given away in case you have been one of the few who have not seen it.
