Top Ten Interior Design Mistakes

Avoid These at All Costs or Risk Disastrous Results!

Designing a home can be hard, which is why you will want to read through this guide before you start to redesign your home interiors. If you know what to avoid, you will have much better results when you finish!

Color coding- One of the largest faux pas is to pair a black tank with black capris or a blue shirt with blue jeans. The same way it is commonly accepted not to color code your clothing choices to the point where you are a solid block of color, you should not attempt to color code your home!

Overstuffing the furniture- Many people have basic formulas that they think every room needs, suchas a television, sofa, loveseat, end table, and coffee table in the living room. In practice this fine, but if the room is too small it is better not to stuff the furniture in and crowd the entire space then to provide one extra spot for people to sit.

Collecting clutter- Sure trinkets can look nice, but if you have small trinkets crowding every room, ledge, and desktop it can get to be a bit much. The better option is to nicely compliment desktops and shelves with a few items and allow space to emphasize the premium items.

Trendy ideas- Following any style trends for your home is always a bad idea since trends change every few months. Unless you plan on changing your home interior design with the trends consistently it is better simply to pick a nice theme that you are comfortable with that is classic versus trendy.

Visually appealing artwork and frames- Many people place a lovely piece of art of a photo in the center of a room where it does not belong. For example, if the piece of art is historical or ancient with black and white, then it does belong in a contemporary setting.

Poor Lighting- Accent lights are wonderful, but if you cannot seem properly they become a problem. Along the same lines, you should not feel blinded every time you walk into a room. Finding the perfect balance is necessary; keeping in mind that sunlight is always best if the room allows for it.

Lack of a central Theme- A home needs a theme if you want the final appearance to be satisfying. Trying to assemble a home without a theme is like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle without the picture, it is not going to work.

Creating a rainbow- Many people get carried away with color forgetting that most homes do not look dignified if they end up like Pee Wee's Fun House. Choose a few colors to use as accents and balance them with neutrals for the best results.

Too many basics- At the same time, you do not want your home to look like a hospital room, so do not be afraid to use some color accents and color in general. Beige, white, and black can get old very quickly.

Poorly maintained plants- Finally, if you do not have the time to water and clean up after house plants then you should not have them. Simply put, they are not attractive if they are dying. Fake is always a better alternative.
