Top Ten Mother's Day Movies to Celebrate Moms

Movies About Mothers for Mom's Day

Christi Bowers
Mother's Day is the time to celebrate Mothers. Really, we should do it all year long because Mothers take care of us, nurture us and help turn us into adults. Mothers face all kinds of issues along the way, such as job loss and financial strain, relationship issues with fathers and other family members, and struggles to deal with their children's medical and emotional traumas. This article celebrates Mothers, and gives kudos to their unyielding dedication to helping take care of their children.

1. Steel Magnolias (1989). This is the ultimate Mother's Day movie. In Steel Magnolias, Sally Fields has to face the issue that her daughter, Julia Roberts, is very ill. She gives her daughter one of her kidneys! Then, when her daughter goes into a coma, she is there for her day and night in the hospital, reading to her, moving her body parts to keep her muscles in shape, and never giving up. Steel Magnolias is a movie about the strength of women, and what better time to celebrate women than Mother's Day.

2. Wildcats (1986). Wildcats stars actress Goldie Hawn, and is about a mother who takes on a job as a highschool football coach to be able to care for her two daughters pending her divorce from their father. The job is far from easy, as none of the players take seriously a female coach, and she has to prove to them she can do the job. However, she may have to do this at the expense of her children, who start to feel that she spends more time with the team than taking care of their needs. Goldie Hawn has to find a way to balance work and her family without a male or father to help her.

3. Striptease (1996). Well, flipping burgers won't pay the bills, so ladies, you have to do something. For Demi Moore, taking a job as a stripper is the way to go. Too bad this means she might not look great for the judge in her custody case. It even gets worse when she gets the chance to hopefully seal her case by doing a strip tease for a congressman who can help her with her daughter. Demi Moore has to face financial woes, custody issues, and the embarrassment of her daughter finding out what she does for a living. What some women will do for their children!

4. StepMom (1988). In this movie, we learn about a great mother and a good stepmother. All Mothers that we celebrate aren't always the biological parents of the children. Susan Sarandon, the biological mother, is going through a divorce. This is a hard enough challenge to face. Add on top of that a new younger girlfriend for dad, and the plot thickens. Things hit the roof when Mom realizes she is terminally ill, and will now have to trust her children to her ex-husband's new wife, the Stepmom (played by Julia Roberts). I have to say, that would probably take me over the edge, and I would be so jealous. She has no choice but to give Julia Roberts all the information she needs to take over as their Mother once she dies. This is a truly touching Mother's Day film.

5. The Seventh Sign (1988). Demi Moore gets to be part of the top ten list twice, as she makes the list for her role in The Seventh Sign. Here, it is time for the apocolypse, and for all of the signs letting the world know the apocolypse has come. One of these signs is a baby being born without a soul. Demi's baby will be that baby. However, if she gives the world hope, by agreeing she would die for her baby, the world will survive. This is an incredible story of the sacrifice of a mother for her unborn child.

6. The Terminator (1984). Sarah Connor will live on forever in the minds of those who watched this popular 80's movie. In this movie, a man is sent back from the future to warn and protect Sarah Connor from a human robot machine sent back in time to assassinate her. It turns out her son will lead a resistance movement against the machines who threaten to take over mankind. Interestingly enough, it is this man from the future who impregnates Sarah Connor with the baby who later will save humans. Sarah Connor is a brave woman, who has to fight to survive so her unborn baby can live and ultimately take part in his destiny.

7. Mask (1985). Starring Cher, this is a motivating Mother's Day movie about a mother who has a son with a disease that causes an enlarged skull and facial disfigurement. She has to help her son get past the stigma he endures with his classmates and in life in general. Cher has her own problems, such as addiction, and her son tries to help her deal with them.

8. Flightplan (2005). Starring Jodie Foster, Flightplan is a movie about a mother whose child has disappeared on a plane. The mother and daughter were sleeping, and someone took the child. Well, where could the child be? There are only so many places to hide on a plane, and there is supposedly no record on the flightplan of the child even being on the plane in the first place. Jodie Foster has to find a way to find her child, despite the crew trying to disprove the child's presence.

9. Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986). Bette Midler stars as a mom whose children are ready to leave the nest, and whose husband is more worried about his affair with their maid. The whole family seems to be a mess. So what does a mother do? Well, in this movie, she is lucky enough to have a homeless man try to commit suicide in her pool. Being unsuccessful, he then helps to turn the family around, and in more ways than one, helps Bette Midler to feel good about herself and her family again.

10. Something's Gotta Give (2003). I put this movie on the list because Diane Keaton, the mother in this movie, has some real life issues to face. Many of these movies are about protecting your children, but this movie is about a mother protecting and caring for herself. Diane Keaton falls for Jack Nicholson's character, and then she getes dumped. He can't be in a relationship. So, she goes around crying everywhere. It's funny, but at the same time, disheartening to see the pain she is in. Well, to turn things around, she simply gets involved with a young doctor who just finds her the epitome of a modern woman. The problem is, she's never really stopped being in love with Jack Nicholson. Besides being a hilarious movie, this portrays mothers as real people, who also fall in love and have their own needs aside from their roles as being caretakers to their children.
