10.) Soulja Boy Tell Em
Two words that can be used to discuss Soulja Boy and his emergence in the double o's are genius and annoying. "Crank Dat" from Soulja Boy's debut album souljaboytellem.com was like a drug that swept over the nation in 2007 like crack swept of Harlem in the 80s, all because the genius that is Soulja Boy had "Crank Dat" all over the Internet. With the song came a dance craze and soon everyone was doing the "Crank Dat" dance, from students at prestigious colleges and universities to U.S soldiers all doing the dance and what's worst doing the dance on video and then uploading it onto YouTube for the world to see. The song was nominated for a Grammy and caused an uproar amongst rappers in which some said Soulja Boy's music was dumbing rap down and others who thought his style was pure genius. Of course anything good when it is saturated turns bad quickly which brings in the annoying part, like going to the club and everyone even that 42 year old (who shouldn't be there) is doing the "Crank Dat...singing along like "yoooooooooooooo, yoooooooooooo!"
9.) Justin Timberlake...
Brought Sexy Back...apparently it was lost in the early 00's and found right after a little accident. After he released his first solo album "Justified" with the hit "Cry me a River" and before he brought sexy back with his sophomore album "Future Sex/Love Sounds" Justin was in the center of the 2004 controversy known as "The Wardrobe Malfunction" during the Super Bowl where one of Janet Jackson's breast was exposed on live TV. Justin also caused the gossip bloggers to chatter when his relationship with Cameron Diaz ended and his relationship with Jessica Biel began.
8.) Kanye West...let's see...
"George Bush doesn't care about Black People." I think that quote explains what Kanye West was for the double o's. Kanye was known primarily for his out burst and tirades ending the decade with the outburst at the VMAs when Taylor Swift won the award for best female video in which Beyonce was nominated in the same category with the video "Single Ladies" Kanye proceeded to the stage during Swift's moment and stated to the audience that Beyonce had the best video's ever and she should have won. He later apologized, but every other year Kanye had something to say about not winning or some sort of situation. Although he came off as arrogant he did have some of the best music during the decade. Each one of his albums had hits...such as College Drop Out's "Jesus Walks" and Late Registration's "Gold Digger", Graduation's "Stronger". Kanye also made waves in the blogesphere with the album 808's and Heartbreak when most of the album was sang with the help of auto tune. With critics confused as to how to critique the album 808's was Kanye's best to date.
7.) Brittney Spears
In the double o's Britney Spears was like watching Titantic, you have a beautiful entity that hits a low point and sinks slowly into CrazyTown! After being America's Sweetheart for years with hit after hit, Brit began to lose it after her marriage to Kevin Federline collapsed and the pop star was photographed clubbing on numerous occasions, and seen with children in what appeared to be unhealthy situations, led to a head shaven, umbrella wailing, and a night in which an ambulance had to take her away. She tried to comeback with the album Blackout which figuratively did almost as well as her other albums, with the single "Gimme More" peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, but her 2007 performance at the VMA's stuck out as the worst in her singing career and many people said it was too soon. Her real comeback was with the album Circus in 2008 with the single "Womanizer" she hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since he first album "Baby One More Time" came out. Unlike the Titantic, Britney was pulled out of her sinking and she leaves the 00's on a high note.
6.) Jennifer Hudson
After she lost American Idol in 2004 in seventh place we all would have forgotten Jennifer Hudson along with many other Idol contestants (and some winners) but her Academy Award winning debuting role in the film "Dream Girls" will keep her in our memories forever. With the movies release in late 2006 Jennifer won many awards in 2007 including a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. Then of course she won the biggest acting achievement with the win of the Oscar for Best Supporting Role of an Actress. In 2008 Jennifer was in "Sex in the City" the movie and "The Secret Lives of Bees" She released her self titled debut album also in 2008 and won a Grammy for Best R&B album in 2008. Of course you can't be a celebrity without making some sort of outrageous news...for J.Hud it was the announcement that she would be marrying David Otunga better known as Punk from the VH1 Reality TV Show "I Love New York," but sad news kept Miss Hudson in our living rooms' late 2008 when the news broke out that her mother, brother, and nephew had been murdered. August 2009 J.Hud gave birth to her first child David Daniel Otunga Jr. She is said to be ending 2009 with a Christmas Special on ABC.
5.) Mariah Carey
She had a number one album every year during the decade before the double o's, but with the new millennium it looked like Mariah Carey was going to be ending her legacy with the failed movie and soundtrack Glitter with her audience thinking she had gone daffy. After dealing with the failure of Glitter MC went on to release Bracelet which was a premature comeback album. The music was decent but her voice wasn't there. It wasn't until the release of Emacipation of Mimi in 2005 when the voice returned. From that album was her best selling single "We Belong Together" which is making many of the best songs of the decade lists. 2008 she released E=MC^2 and made history having 18 #1 singles putting her ahead of Elvis Presley in second place behind The Beatles. She married Nick Cannon which that story out shone the album, mostly because of the secrecy of the couple, marrying only after a short time of dating, and the fact that Nick Cannon is 11 years younger then the MC. She release another album in the fall of 2009 called Memoirs of an Imperfect Angell, and had a role in the movie Precious. The double o's turned out to be pretty decent for MC after a rough start.
4.) Miley Cyrus
Her father brought us a one his wonder with "Achy Breaky Heart" but with Miley he brought us a gold mine. Another Disney grown star bursting out with the show Hannah Montana, it soon became a phenomenon (just like High School Musical) and you couldn't walk through a store without seeing a tee shirt for a girl that had the Disney real life princess on it. With the success of Hannah Montana, Miley released he own music and a clothing line featured at Wal-Mart in which she teamed with Max Azria to have stylish clothes available for young girls at a reasonable price. In 2008 Everyone went nuts when the then 15 year old Miley did a photo shoot for Vanity Fair in which she was topless but only revealed her back. Many people thought it wasn't in good taste. She also performed at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards in what was considered riske performance almost Britney Spears-esk that cause quite a stir around adults, because of the stars squeaky clean image. With he fame that came in the mid-late 00's I hope she doesn't follow in the footsteps of some of the other kids from the Disney Channel.
3.) Weezy F. Baby (please say the Baby)
If this was a list of top ten rappers of the 00's then Lil Wayne would be #1. Although he had success in the late 90's and a couple albums in the beginning of the new millennium's decade 2004's The Carter put Wayne on the map, selling over 1 million copies. With the release of The Carter II came more success, but it was work on mixtapes other collaborations that kept this artist relevant and in the eyes of the world with out releasing an album for a couple of years. Perhaps this is why Wayne's The Carter III was a much anticipated album and sold over one million copies in the first week of its release. Wayne is so big he is the first rapper to appear on the CMAs.
2.) Michael Jackson
It's a shame that it takes the passing of an icon for everyone to realize just how iconic someone is and that is the case for legend Michael Jackson the King of Pop. Beside his over publicized and tragic death in 2009, MJJ released the album Invincible in 2001 and also had a 30th anniversary special at Madison Square Garden. Invincible didn't do as well as been expected and MJJ also found himself at odds with his label Sony. Unfortunately the double o's proved to be a tumultuous 10 years for the beloved star. After having a third child nicknamed Blanket, Jackson was viewed holding the baby over the balcony. He said it was so that the fans could see him, but to the world it look like someone who was crazy dangling a baby over a four story balcony. Journalist Martin Bashir did a series of interviews with the King of Pop in 2003, which once aired showed a razzled, nervous like Jackson who said he "shared his bed with children" and showed Jackson and the teenager that would later accused the pop sensation of molestation. The case and trial went on for two years, during which there were different scenes of MJJ, once dancing on top of a SUV, another where he wore pajamas, and the times where the Jacksons came in dressed similarly. In 2005 MJJ was acquitted of all charges, but the stress of the trial stuck with him and in fact he never lived at Neverland Valley Ranch after the place have been search by police in the beginning. After the trial he live almost nomadic going here and there with his children that he kept hidden under veils and masks. 2006 he was given the Diamond award for selling 100 million albums and in 2008 a special 25th anniversary edition of Thriller was released. In 2009 Jackson tried once again to make a comeback when he announced he would do a series of shows called " This is It" but unfortunately he died before the dream of this comeback could be materialized...of course his death could be seen as comeback considering his albums sales skyrocketed after his death and his memorial was like the concert of the century not just the decade. RIP Michael Jackson.
1.) Beyonce
Um...I think Kanye said it best at the wrong time during the VMAs...Beyonce had one of the best videos ever. Single Ladies did what Soulja Boy's Crank Dat did but a little less annoying. Besides "Single Ladies" and the rest of Sasha Fierce, Beyonce was the Queen of the 2000's. First with Destiny's Child she had a few of the hottest singles like: "Independent Women" and "Survior" before releasing her debut album "Dangerously In Love" creating a buzz with her single "Crazy in Love" featuring Jay Z and the uh oh uh oh booty dance. Her next album was B-Day, with the singles De Ja Vu and the big hit "Irreplaceable" having women say "To the left to the left." Although she had already been in the movies Austin Powers: GoldMember, Fighting Temptations, and Pink Panther, Beyonce's biggest role was in the movie Dream Girls. She was also in the movie Obssessed. Her private marriage to Jay-Zjust caused the gossip zines to go crazy. Beyonce has become one of the most influential celebrities of the decade inspiring many women to empowered and to have fun.
