I have to say, however, that love stories definitely sell movies. The love story is what the depressed, broken-hearted, down on her luck female's gonna choose almost every time. Or, maybe even the female who has just this small glimmer of hope that she's going to someday actually be happy. Ladies (and anyone else who may choose to watch these movies), before I subject you to this top ten list of sappy fall in love movies, might I just suggest that you go for an action flick or adventure film. You probably would be much better off!
Here are, if you really want them, the top ten must see sappy love story movies of all time, just for you to pain your way through, crying and using all of your tissues, until you become enthralled in the belief that you can actually find love.
1. Leap Year (2009). I have to put this one at the top of the love story sappy list because I just watched it, of course. What does this romantic comedy have to offer? Hmm, that's the question. The movie is about an American girl who goes to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend on February 29th on a leap year. Her boyfriend is there on a business trip. Supposedly, there's this tradition that you can ask a guy to marry you once every four years there on this day. So, besides the irresponsibly funny theme, you get to see these beautiful sights of Ireland, including the picturesque sunny hillside and an old run down castle on top of a hill. There's this Irish guy who isn't going to put up with any of the crap this gal puts out. And, in return, she just can't believe his arrogance. It's the perfect match, right? She ends up far from her destination, and this guy is the only one who can get her to Dublin, where her boyfriend awaits. Of course, every mishap under the sun happens. So, he's got like four days to get her to fall in love with him. If he wants her, right? Watch and see what unfolds. After this movie, you'll either throw up, or wish you could go to Ireland and meet a guy like this.
2. Arthur (1981). Okay, so the first choice was about a girl wanting to find love and happiness. Now, we see a guy get a dose of this medicine. Arthur is, basically, an adult child. His family is rich, so he never learned how to do anything or got a job. He's a waste, drinking away the days and nights. The family certainly has his life planned. They want him to marry this lady who meets their expectations for him. Of course, he's not having any of this. He met Linda, and although she has no money, she somehow got his heart. If he chooses her, he can say goodbye to his family's money. What's it gonna be, Arthur? Dudley Moore, of course, makes this one of the funniest movies of all time. And, you've got the romance as well. A funny romantic comedy, how convenient. How convenient for those girls who want to see two people fall in love and laugh about it on the way.
3. Australia (2008). Nicole Kidman has a husband. Well, that's until she goes to Australia to bring him back home to England and finds he's been killed. He was there taking care of a ranch they own in the country. She's certainly in up to her earlobes when she realizes her employees are actually part of the plot. And, to save the ranch, she's gonna have to step into her husband's shoes, without any of these men. In comes the Drover, Hugh Jackman in his rarest form. He's full of attitude, and ready to sweep her off of her feet. Right onto the floor. And leave her there! She finally gets him to agree to help her, and together they set out to save the ranch by taking a journey with their cattle to sell them to come up with funds. Guess what happens on the journey? I'll bet you can't figure it out. (Of course, I'm joking. This is what the article is about, remember?)
4. As Good As It Gets (1997). No, people, I'm not just going through all the movies that start with the letter 'A' first. (Actually I am, but don't tell anyone.) This is also another prime example of a sappy love story. Helen Hunt has a child with lots of medical problems. Her kid needs help. Jack Nicholson is this obsessive compulsive, ridiculous guy that eats in the restaurant where she works. He pisses her off on an almost daily basis. He overhears the stories about her son, and one day agrees to help her out. Somehow, she ends up accepting the offer, and her son starts feeling better. Even more mysteriously, Helen finds herself actually interested in this guy. He can be totally rude to the point of abandon, but sometimes... sometimes... he has just the right thing to say.
5. Far and Away (1992). Nicole Kidman, you get to be on this list twice. In this hopelessly romantic movie, a man and woman decide to travel to America, to start a new life. Of course, they don't like each other. They have to just bear each other enough to share a room in a whorehouse so they can survive. Things start to get ugly. But sometimes, you find that if you hate someone long enough, you actually might start to fall in love with them. It's a funny thing. Add to that having to survive with that person, having to endure, being totally broke, facing challenges. The journey alone is enough to mesmerize and entrance even the strongest walled heart.
6. When Harry Met Sally (1989). Put together two people who keep running into each other over periods of years, who become good friends, who do all kinds of things together, who know everything about each other... you get the picture, and add two broken hearts with a girl crying in her bedroom... eventually something's going to happen. Maybe he just wanted her not to have to fake another orgasm, haha. This is the love story of the century.
7. Kate and Leopold (2001). Meg Ryan joins Nicole Kidman in making a second showing on this romantic whatever top ten list. Oh yes, we're discussing this list of sappy love story movies that will make you search for tissues. In Kate and Leopold, Leopold (played by Hugh Jackman) shows up in the present day. He's come from centuries ago through a time portal Kate's (Meg Ryan's) ex-boyfriend has found. Imagine her surprise, to meet a gentleman in all sorts of the word. You really can't find them much in this day and time. It's not with much surprise that a guy from the past has to come here to the present to make this love story happen. Is she going to keep him here, or go back in time with him?
8. The Last of the Mohicans (1920). I have to admit that I actually fell for this one. I try not to, as I sit and hear Daniel Day-Lewis say to Madeline Stowe, "I will find you." The two of them are about to get separated, out in the wilderness back before the American land was settled. She has been captured and he has to find a way to free her. He's going to do it, no matter what it takes. I have just one question for you ladies, have you ever met a guy who you think would really do this for a woman? If so, please email me at okayyouwereright at icantbelieveit.com. Otherwise, just keep on thinking there's a chance this movie was a true story. Maybe in our dreams, huh?
9. The Notebook (2004). I might have to give credit to The Notebook. I seriously didn't lose my suspension of disbelief during the whole movie. A lady with Alzheimer's wrote a notebook of her life with her love, before she lost her memory. Now, her love reads it to her to help her remember. It is so touching and heartfelt. It's really difficult to watch the love of your life start to forget the life the two of you spent together. Warning: you will truly forget that love is just a facade, that these are just movies and that guys don't really love this much. (It certainly doesn't hurt that my grandfather loved my grandfmother like this.)
10. Somewhere in Time (1980). Christopher Reeve is chasing Jane Seymour back through time. Somehow, this lady made it into the future to give him a watch and tell him to come back to her. Christopher Reeve has to find a way to get back in time to find her. Once he gets there, she doesn't know who he is. That certainly is committal to an endeavor to go back in time to find your true love.
