In part 1, we looked at5 fairly interesting games: A Tim Tebow simulator from the Nintendo era. A run the ball till your feet fall off entry for the Neo Geo. A college version of Madden, featuring Bill Walsh. And the final installment of the best Madden alternative in 2004. Now, I present you with the cream of the contact sports crop.
5.) NFL Blitz.
The makers of NBA Jam used these expertise for creating exaggerated versions of popular sports, and came up with NFL Blitz. The main draw of Blitz was that you can attack opposing players after the play is blown dead. I imagine this would have been a feature in a XFL video game as well.
4.) NFL Street 3.
While you can't powerbomb opposing players into tables like in Blitz, you can use special attacks to embarrass them. Run across the wall to avoid tackles. Use Gamebreaker passes to insure a touchdown. launch yourself into the quarterback, without having to deal with a ref handing out ticky tack penalties.
3.) Mutant League Football.
Before Madden, Electronic Arts had a series of games under the Mutant League umbrella(and even a cartoon series.) Mutant league football featured orcs, robots, lizard men, and lowly humans competing in a futuristic version of America's game. Exploding footballs, land mines, and lava pits were just a few obstacles presented before players. Oh, you could also call a play to kill the referee whenever the situation called for it. Quite possibly my favorite non-licensed sports game ever.
2.) Super Tecmo Bowl 3.
The Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis installments of Tecmo Bowl brought about a metric ton on improves. first still you'll notice is the graphical improvements. Now, you no longer have to straight your eyes looking at your ball carriers sprite flicker when near a bunch of defenders. Weather and better playbooks are another plus.
1.) Tecmo Bowl.
While the second NES Tecmo Bowl game(titled Tecmo Super Bowl) was a step up from the first, it lacked the legendary existence of Tecmo Bo. Bo Jackson is an absolute beast in this game. He makes the Madden '05 Michael Vick look like a bench player. You can litterally toy with defenders by running back and forth between end zones, and make every last one of them miss takes for till the time runs out in the quarter. It's just so much fun!
