Top Ten Prince Songs of the 2000's

Prince Has Been Releasing Quality Music Since 1978. Here Are His Best Since 2000

Tim Hawver
Many people only think of Prince as the 1980's megastar. They only remember the massive hits like 'Purple Rain,' 'Little Red Corvette,' and 'Raspberry Beret.' But since hitting the music world in 1978, Prince has consistently released music.

With his Musicology tour in 2004 and his recent Super Bowl halftime performance, Prince has regained the public's attention. Although the magic that surrounded him in the eighties has vanished, his music is till consistently good. If you've stopped following Prince, here are the top ten songs he's released in the 2000's that you have to hear:

10. West. This is from Prince's 2003 jazz instrumental album 'NEWS.' It is a soothing jazz piece. This song really makes you appreciate the musician that Prince is.

9. A Case of U. This is a cover of a Joni Mitchell song. It is a hidden gem from Prince's 2002 'One Night Alone,' that was released exclusively to his fan club members. Favorite Lyric: I could drink a case of you, and still be on my feet.

8. Musicology. The title track from his 2004 release is a funky, up beat song that can make anybody dance. It was the perfect song to launch his comeback tour. Favorite Lyric: Wish I had a dollar for every time I say, don't you miss the feeling music gave you back in the day.

7. Last December. The closing number on his 2001 album 'The Rainbow Children.' This song is as moving as anything from the 'Purple Rain,' era. Favorite Lyric: Did you stand tall or did you fall, did you give your all?

6. Reflection. 'Reflection,' was originally released to the NPG club, but later included on 'Musicology.' It is a stripped down, acoustic song that showcases Prince's incredible songwriting ability. Favorite Lyric: I forgot to look up at the moon because I was too busy looking at you.

5. Lolita. From 2006's '3121,' Prince shows that he's still the best at writing a pop song. Favorite Lyric: You're much too young to peep my stash, you're trying to write checks your body can't cash.

4. The Everlasting Now. The best rendition of this song can be found on Prince's 2003 'One Night Alone.....Live,' box set. It is performed as funky as only Prince can make it and guaranteed to get you moving. Favorite Lyric: Don't let nobody bring you down, the everlasting now.

3. Cinnamon Girl. This is a political song, disguised as a pop tune. Prince tackles the issue of discrimination against middle easterners after 9/11. Favorite Line: Cinamon girl of mixed heritage never knew the meaning of color lines.

2. Fury. A pure rocker from '3121.' Prince shows that he still knows about rock 'n roll. Favorite Lyric: Sun to shadow, rose to a thorn. There aint no fury like a woman scorned.

1. Call My Name. One of Prince's best ballads ever. This song is proof that Prince still has it. His ability to write such a beautiful song is what places him among the best of all-time. Favorite Lyric: Heard a voice on the news saying people wanna stop the war, if they had a love as sweet as you they'd forget what they were fighting for.

As pop music becomes more and more disposable, new Prince albums are like breaths of fresh air. Prince's music has stood the test of time and artists of his ability rarely come around. If you find yourself needing to hear some good music, don't be afraid to pick up one of Prince's new releases because he still has it!

I have to disagree with you on this list. I do think Call My Name is a classic, but you need to add Future baby Mama, Colonized Mind, Black Sweat, 1+1+1=3, and 3121
