Top Ten Prom Songs 2009

A Little Difference Can Be a Good Thing

John Galt
Throughout our lives, there are certain milestones and events that we look back to throughout our lives. Events like passing our driver's test, the college acceptance letter, our first real job, and definitely our High School Prom Night. Whether you go your senior year, or every year, the entire experience of Prom is one that you are unlikely to forget. While there are so many things that go into making Prom such a special experience, one of the most noticeable is the music. Without songs to dance to and remember our night by, Prom just wouldn't be what it is. With that in mind, I present this list of the top ten Prom Songs that could be requested at your 2009 Prom, along with what makes them so special.

10.) In Your Eyes - Peter Gabrielle: Covered by numerous bands, and immediately recognizable, "In Your Eyes" makes a great song to dance to. It's serious enough to be enjoyable for a slow dance, and still fun to listen to at the same time. For managing to be cute, and yet not overly sappy, "In Your Eyes" gets the number ten spot on our top ten prom song countdown.

9.) May I Have This Dance? - Copeland: Just look at the title. Aaron Marsh has a great voice, and the harmonics in this song are perfect. The soundtrack to that moment when you nervously approach a girl on the dance floor, "May I Have This Dance?" is a song that symbolizes the Prom perfectly, and is definitely fun to listen to.

8.) Do You Want to Dance? - the Ramones: Keeping with the dancing theme of number 9, we have the Ramones with "Do You Want to Dance?". Who says that prom songs have to be slow and sad? Have some fun at your Prom, play the Ramones! A great song to dance to, it has a great beat and while it may not be THE prom song, it's a good one.

7.)Follow You Down - the Gin Blossoms: A very well-known song and one that seems to show up at a lot of proms. It's cute in a fun way, and it's something that everyone can dance to.

6.) Somewhere Only We Know - Keane: It may not be the stereotypical prom song; but how can you argue with something that brings up the image of a separate world for just you and your date? For capturing that notion of something special and secret, shared between two people, "Somewhere Only We Know" is number 6 on the list for top ten prom songs.

5.) Wait for It: David Mellilo: You've never heard of David Mellilo? Well, when it comes to prom songs, "Wait for It" is definitely a good one to consider. At it's core, it's a song about waiting for the right person, and how special relationships can truly be. It's not well known, but it's a good prom song nonetheless.

4.) Collide - Howie Day: The song to my senior prom, and a good one at that. There's something that almost everyone can connect to in "Collide". It's sad, kind of haunting, and not easily forgotten. Sometimes things don't work out, and even though prom is supposed to be happy, there's something under the surface about saying goodbye to high school and the life you've know. Which is why "Collide" makes such a good prom song.

3.)Here's to the Night - Eve 6: A song used for countless proms, "Here's to the Night" is and always will be on the best. You've got one night and one chance for your prom, make it count and enjoy every second of it. Eve 6 hits it perfectly, and although it may not be a sappy love song, it is an awesome prom theme, one which captures the ideas and notions of the night perfectly.

2.) Good Riddance - Green Day: The name of the song is "Good Riddance", not "Time of Your Life", and I may be a bit biased here, but this is song captures Prom so well. Yes, it's stereotypical, and yes it is a little overplayed, but it just fits the bill perfectly. For winding down that special Prom night, there's no song like "Good Riddance". It hits all the right notes and connects on all the right levels. It's definitely deserving of the number two spot.1.) The New Year - Death Cab for Cutie: While this might seem like a strange choice for number one, there's good reason for this pick. Even more so than being about the date you bring with you, prom is about the feeling of the night, that one time in high school when you can be whoever you want. The lyrics symbolize everything about prom so perfectly it's almost scary. No matter who are, for one night, we will pretend to be the people we wish we were. We will wear the nicest clothes we can find, spend hours getting ready, and think that there is nothing in the world that can stop us. Yes, it may just be a passing feeling, but there is no better musical representation of that feeling that "The New Year".
