In this article, I have chosen my picks for the top ten summer horror flicks. Not all of them involve getting axed by a lake. Some of them are much more devious. Read on...
1. Blair Witch Project (1999). I choose this as the top summer scary horror movie. Why? Much of the excitement comes from this being a psychological thriller and not just blood and gore. The people in the film let their mind play tricks on them, instead of reality. I can't blame them, because I would be scared out of my mind to go camping in any woods, yet alone the mountains of Burkittsville, MD where there is supposedly a witch or something. Even if you don't believe in witches, I would be willing to bet you would have been just as scared as them to be out there camping in the middle of nowhere in the woods.
2. Friday the 13th Series (1980-2009). This is a classic set of horror movies, the first of which released in 1980. These classic summer movies and horror scenes are based on a boy dying at a summer camp in the lake. The movies are about seeking revenge for the boy Jason's death. In the first movie, Jason's mother tries to kill anyone who wants to reopen the summer camp. In the next few movies, Jason is still apparently alive and sets out on killing sprees to revenge his mother's death and keep himself safe. At some point, Jason is killed, but he is even resurrected in future movies.
3. Wrong Turn (2003). This movie will definitely make me thing before I set out on my own on some backroads for a trip, even in a working automobile. Wrong Turn is about some people ending up stranded after going on some backroads in West Virginia. They run into some cannibals, who apparently prey on any humans that end up wrecking or running out of gas near their home. This is one scary summer movie!
4. Deliverance (1972). This movie stars Burt Reynolds. There are four businessmen who decide to go canoeing in the wilderness in Georgia down a river. The locals in this area are very strange, and maybe inbred. You can imagine that there is going to be a battle of survival for the businessmen against the locals, as strange things start happening during their trip. This movie is considered a classic summer horror flick as well.
5. Identity (2003). Ray Liotta, John Cusack and Amanda Pete star in this summer horror film where some travelers all end up in a hotel in the desert due to a storm. Strange murders start happening of the travelers, one by one, as they begin to realize there was something that brought those specific travelers to this hotel to be killed.
6. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). This movie is about some kids who just graduated high school leaving town to celebrate. They hit and kill a man accidentally, and decide to get rid of the corpse instead of going to the police. You can imagine, that someone's going to be upset by their decision. The movie stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
7. Hostel: Part II (2007). In this sequel to the original movie Hostel, three girls are studying in Italy for the summer. They end up in Slovakia, just like the guys in the original movie. All the blood and gore from the first movie is still there, and perhaps more. If you're the type who likes the bloody horror movies, this flick is for you.
8. Babel (2008). This movie stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett as a married couple from California who go to Morocco on vacation. They end up in an uncomfortable international situation, to say the least, when a bullet hits the wife while they are in a bus on the road. The wife cannot travel on the bus in her condition, but the chances of getting an ambulance to that location are remote, especially since the incident was considered a terrorist attack.
9. The Strangers (2008). A married couple go to their summer vacation home after leaving a wedding reception. The events that ensue begin with a knock at the door in the middle of the night. You can guess what happens after that... Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star in this summer scary movie.
10. Jaws (1975). Roy Scheider knows how to set up a horror movie scene. He is intense, and wants to protect the people on his island. Well, if they get in the water, what's he gonna do? Of course, the town wants to let people in the water, because this holiday weekend is a big moneymaker for tourism. However, Roy Scheider's character as the police chief wants to stop the mayor from allowing this. What's it going to take for the town to believe him? Another shark attack? Well, you got your wish, police chief, because that's exactly what happened. This is a classis, memorable summer horror flick about what happens if you get in the water.
What are your favorite summer horror flicks?
