10) Under My Skin
A bit softer than the usual Skillet song, it is nonetheless a very good one. It talks about the fact that God is holding us when we are in pain, and the problems seem too much to bear. He is still there with us, "under our skin". The song is from their CD Collide, which to me is their best album.
Best line: "When I hurt, when I bleed, You're holding me. I feel You scratching at the surface; under my skin..."
9) Monster
From their most recent album, Awake, this song discusses the monster within. That thing that causes us to do what we do not wish to do; that creature we wish to hide from the view of others. He wishes to get rid of his demon, but he still feels it within himself. The truth is that we all carry some form of this monster within our souls, and it is hard to get rid of it. Only Christ can help us escape from it. This song is not one of their harder songs, but is still very energetic and powerful.
Best line: "I must confess that I (in a monstrous voice) FEEL LIKE A MONSTER!!!"
8) Hero
Also from their latest album, this song features some extra vocals from their new drummer, Jen Ledger. Jen is a good addition to the band, being a great drummer and adding a fantastic voice as well. The song Hero is talking about the fact that the singer needs Someone to save his life. This Hero will help him fight for what is right, and wants to help protect and save the weak as well. This is the sort of song that makes you want to get up and fight...hopefully for what's right.
Best line: "Who's gonna fight for what's right; Who's gonna help us survive?...A Hero's gonna save me just in time."
7) Rebirthing
From one of their best albums, Comatose, this song is about our need for a spiritual revival in our personal lives. The singer is tired of living for himself; he wants to live for Christ, and give his life, his all, to Him.
Best line: "I lie here lifeless in this cocoon; shedding my skin 'cuz I'm ready to. I wanna break out; I found a way out. I don't believe that it's gotta be this way."
6) Open Wounds
This song is a bonus track for their album Collide. Easily one of their most emo songs, it is about the feeling of betrayal by a loved one, and the hypocrisy felt because of that betrayal. However, the singer does not want to permanently lose what he had with the betrayer, as evidenced in the bridge. This is also one of their hardest songs, and the angry sound goes well with the angry message.
Best line: "Tell me why you broke me down and betrayed my trust in you? I'm not giving up, giving in; when will this war end? When will it end? And you can't stop me from falling apart...'cuz my self-destruction is all your fault."
5) Imperfection
This song, from their CD Collide, was at one point my favorite song of theirs (side note: these top five have all, at one point or another, been my favorite Skillet song.). Everyone has felt inadequate before; the point of this song is to show that we are each "fearfully and wonderfully made", as the verse (Biblical and lyrical) goes. A harder song of theirs, the music goes harmoniously with the words
Best line: "You're worth so much, that Heaven would touch the face of humankind for you. How special you are; a rebel in your day. You're fearfully and wonderfully made. Tears falling down again; come, let the healing begin..."
4) Fingernails
A bit creepy-sounding at first (hey, it works), this song from the album Collide has a bit of an emo tint to it. It talks about the feeling of uselessness and failure; about every dream falling apart. We cannot, as Christians, hope to accomplish anything without the help of Christ.
Best line: "I'm empty, lonely, and accused; accused without a word. My fingernails are chipping down from crawling in the dirt. I'm so lost, lost and confused. I threw it all away. How can I be beautiful, when I'm so afraid?"
3) Collide
From (obviously) the album Collide, this song contains one of the greatest sounds ever concocted: violins accompanying rock music. This song is one of those songs you sing when you fell like your about to lose Faith. That Little Voice inside helps you when you feel completely lost. I love the violin solo at the beginning, especially how it suddenly turns into this blaring rock music after a few seconds.
Best line: "There's Something deep inside that keeps my Faith alive; when all you can do is hide from the fear that's deep inside of you."
2)Whispers in the Dark
Believe me; I had soooo much trouble deciding between this and the number one song. Honestly, these two will regularly change places, depending on my mood at any point of the day. What I love about Whispers in the Dark, from the Comatose CD, is that it is God talking to us, telling us that He will always be there for us. He loves us so much that He is willing to chase us down to take care of us. The song is not particularly hard, but it features some great guitar solos, especially at the end.
Best line: "Despite the lies that you're making, your love is Mine for the taking. My Love is just waiting to turn your tears to roses. I'll be the One Who's gonna hold you; I'll be the One that you run to. My Love is a burning, consuming Fire."
1) Those Nights
This song is special to me because it is one of those best friend songs; I immediately think of him when I hear it. The two friends are remembering when they were young and would spend the night at each other's house. They would do nothing but laugh at their problems and encourage each other. This song is from Comatose; not a particularly hard song, it has a sort of symphonic beauty to its sound. This song, to me at least, brings a wonderful nostalgic feeling to the listener, reminding them of "the good old days", whatever or whenever they are for you.
Best line: "Remember when we'd: stay up late in the dark all night; in a dark room lit by the T.V. light? Through all the hard times in my life, those nights kept me alive. Listen to the radio play all night; didn't wanna go home to another fight. Through all the hard times in my life, those nights kept me alive."
Well, that's it. Agree with me? Good. Don't? Well, you must have bad taste in music (Just kidding!). Have no idea who they are? You were just searching for info on new skillets because your last one broke, and you stumbled upon this odd article? Great! You should try listening to some Skillet. They are a great band, and deserve to be recognized for their music. That's all. You can go back to your frying pan shopping now.
