Top Ten Skyscrapers of 2009 Named by Emporis

Emporis has named the top ten skyscrapers in the world for 2009, in an announcement made on February 23, 2010. The Emporis Award recognizes outstanding skyscrapesr around the globe every year. Aqua in Chicago, Illinois USA was designated the 2009 Skyscraper of the Year by the Emporis jury.

Emporis honored Aqua with the Gold Award. In the number two spot was O14 in Dubai, which took the Silver Award. The Met in Bangkok, Thailand was number three and took the Bronze Award.

Aqua is an 81 story residential and hotel tower located in downtown Chicago. The skyscraper,which was noted for its fascinating shape, has a wavy looking exterior that looks different from every angle and in different lights. The Emporis jury cited the tower for brilliant technical achievement and for the precision of construction. Aqua was lauded for green design innovations in an extremely large building. Developer, Magellan Development Group, LLC, has applied for a LEED certification for the skyscraper.

Aqua was one of two Chicago towers on the Emporis skyscraper list. The Trump International Hotel & Tower was named the number five tower on the list. Chicago is known as the birthplace of the skyscraper, so the designations recognize Chicago's history of innovation in skyscraper design and construction.

New York also had two skyscrapers on the list. The Bank of America Tower was number 7 and the William Beaver House was named number 10. The Milliennium Tower in San Francisco, California took 9th place. In total there were five skyscrapers from the U.S.A. On the Emporis Top Ten List.

Dubai had two towers on the 2009 list: O14 was number two and Almas Tower was number eight. The Torres de Hercules in Los Barrios, Spain was in fourth place. The Red Apple in Rotterdam, Netherlands was in sixth place.

    Interesting! ... in Minnesota, we do not have anything remarkable tall, but we have farmers who are 'out standing' in their fields.. :)
