Top Ten Sleeper Wide Receivers (WRs) in Fantasy Football 2009 for Week 1

Erik M. Dell
The start of the 2009 season is upon us with the Pittsburgh Steelers playing the Tennessee Titans and thus beginning their defense of last year's Superbowl season. A few short days later the rest of the NFL will play their games and more importantly fantasy football gurus will start to see the fruits of their labor take place. Draft after draft you have agonized each pick, time and time again you built your team. Now comes the prize moment as the pigskin is moved up and down the field.

If you are anything like me then long ago you have abandoned rooting for one particular team. Sure I appreciate the Patriots efficiency or the Falcon's improvement but I care more about stats at this point in the season. So with the start of the season approaching here are BabyBlueMonkey.com's official week 1 picks for wide receiver for fantasy football 2009.

1. Anquan Boldin - The mere fact that Boldin is listed as a sleeper should raise some eyebrows. The Talented Mr. Roto just extrapolated a fact that actually shows you that when Fitzgerald and Boldin play in the same game that Boldin stats are better. Hmmm, not bad for a guy who is consistently getting drafted in the late third round. To top that off, Kurt Warner says he's feeling fantastic and of course it's not likely the Cardinals are going to run the ball a ton.

2. Anthony Gonzalez - The former WR3 is all grown up and a mean looking WR2 with a Mr. Peyton Manning throwing him the ball. Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark will get their numbers and Addai will get his carries. After that I expect Gonzalez to flash some brilliance. He can be especially useful in leagues that start 3 wide receivers.

3. Derrick Mason - This guy is like a perennial sleeper. One of the most underrated players in the game today. Mason has been quietly tearing up the league with his ultra fearless slot receiving. Look for some big numbers against a sloppy Kansas City team. On top of that I expect Joe Flacco to continue his trending upwards status from last year.

4. Devin Hester - This guy is going to have to suck royally for me not to pick him every week. Although I think Jay Cutler is a crybaby and not a top ten quarterback I do believe he is an improvement over Kyle Orton. The sheer velocity of the ball should work in the speed demons favor. Pretty much the only option behind a subpar WR2 and a RB, Hester should get a decent amount of targets.

5. Bernard Berrian - Berrian was often relegated to a mercy pick in the late rounds of drafting in spite of being a solid number one receiver. Then all of a sudden a Hall of Fame greybeard comes into town and Berrian is going a lot sooner in the draft but still considered a sleeper. Favre will have to throw to somebody and that somebody will more often than not be Berrian. Look for some decent numbers that should open a few eyes.

6. Josh Morgan - Shaun Hill isn't that bad of a QB. Michael Crabtree is doing his best Jay Cutler crying act and will most likely miss either the season or a significant amount of the season. I bet Singletary is pissed. Who wouldn't want to play for Singletary? Crabtree is an idiot, pure and simple. It doesn't take anyone beyond a fifth grade education to realize the money he is turning down will not be there next year. Is he going to magically be the number one pick or is he magically going to drop off the planet and get drafted in the third or fourth round if some GM decides they don't mind an idiot on their team. Man! I hate greedy people. Anyways with the idiot out of the picture look for Morgan to actually show up, play, and not cry. As for Crabtree, there are always the Cowboys.

7. Santana Moss - He gets no love despite his ability for big games. The Giants don't look anywhere near as intimidating as they did when they won the Superbowl. Actually, I don't think its possible to be an intimidating with the now mega rich Eli Manning. Speaking of which, what the heck is wrong with the collective bargaining agreement if Eli can get a bigger contract than Peyton. Moss will get some big plays because well the WR2 on this team still isn't decided. Someone has to make the big plays. Look for Campbell to hit Moss with two TDs.

8. DeSean Jackson - This is the year that Jackson shows some maturity. Maybe. I'm pretty sure he won't be dropping the ball at the one. Jackson really is a quick deep threat. McNabb loves him and the only potential problem is McNabb can't throw to him every down. I expect Jackson to have a monster year sprinkled with some really big plays. Look for some high yardage and a TD against Carolina.

9. Chad Ochocinco - Really I just wanted to write his name. Anyways I've already discussed how porous the Denver defense is in my top ten running backs article. The same applies here and Carson Palmer is healthy, er kind of. Palmer should play week 1 and Chad will return to form, especially for this game. Look for great numbers here.

10. Nate Burleson - Another wide receiver who will benefit from having his quarterback back (oh boy that was bad). Anyways, I expect Seattle to put up some good points against a shaky St. Louis team. And by the way Burelson could have been snagged late late in the draft, for some reason people avoided him like the plague. We shall see.

Well, there are my ten picks for the best wide receivers during week one of the 2009 fantasy football season. Keep in mind that I play as well and will be making my picks for starters based on my sleeper predications. With all that being said visit BabyBlueMonkey.com to follow my season and my articles for picks. If you are bored feel free to read some of my other articles. Thanks for the click and GOOD LUCK!
