Study the moon. As with many other fish, smallmouth bass are affected by the moon phases and researching when they are most active according to the moon is very beneficial to any fisherman. You will greatly increase your chances of catching fish if you understand when and how they run.
Use light line. The lighter your line is, the less likely that they fish will see it and the more bites and, therefore, the more bass you will catch. Smallmouth bass have very good eyesight and won't hit a heavy line as quickly as they will an almost invisible light one.

Use small crank baits. Small sized lures tend to work well with smallmouth bass fishing if you would rather not use live bait. So think small lures when fishing for bass.
Use natural tones. As I stated before, smallmouth bass have very good eyesight, so stick with natural colored lures and jigs for smallmouth bass. They like brown, orange, olive, black, and yellow bait. Pick colors that imitate bait fish and minnows.
Fish mid day. Experience has proven that mid day is the best time to catch smallmouth bass. Smallmouth bass love bright sunshine. Therefore sunny days and sunny times of the day are the best time to fish for them.
Use fly tackle. Fly tackle is effective for catching smallmouth bass. Floating line works very well for angling them.
