Top Ten Snow Day Movies

Zac Wassink
My list of top ten snow day movies will differ from others for several reasons. Anybody that has followed my work through the years is quite familiar with my love for all things Christmas. Evidence of such love is found below. Also, these ten snow day movies are, for the most part, flicks that the wife and I enjoy when we are snowed in. Those that hate Christmas movies, any and all chick flicks or movies that don't have any explosions will not be a fan of this particular list. After all, snow day movies should be relaxing films that you enjoy while sipping on some hot chocolate or spiced wine. Light some candles or your fireplace and enjoy these ten snow day movies.

Christmas snow day movies

Top ten snow day movies #1: The Polar Express

A perfect snow day movie because of, if for nothing else, all of the snow that's shown. There's snow in the kids' hometown, snow along the train's route and, of course, snow at the North Pole. The music throughout Polar Express is catchy and non-annoying for the most part, and the film is one that you can enjoy by yourself, with a significant other or with your kids. A fine little snow day movie.

Top ten snow day movies #2: White Christmas

White Christmas is the ultimate "it's snowing at 8pm on Christmas Eve" snow day movie. The Christmas-themed music sets the ultimate mood even if you're watching the movie in February, and the scene where the doors behind the main stage are opened to reveal an awesome snowy backdrop is a phenomenal ending to the film.

Top ten snow day movies #3: Elf

I only really got into Elf in the past year thanks to the Mrs. Elf is a comedy much different than the other Christmas snow day movies listed here, and is ideal for those dreary winter afternoons causing you to be in a funk for no particular reason. The "younger brother's" acting throughout the movie is somewhat of a sore spot for the wife, especially during the "singing in Central Park" scene. This just makes the end of the movie that much more entertaining for yours truly.

Top ten snow day movies #4: It's a Wonderful Life

I've never been one to sit and watch IAWL on Christmas Eve, as there are numerous, numerous better ways to spend your time before heading out to Midnight Mass. The film's setting and story does make for one great snow day movie that is ideal for both before and after Christmas Day. Watching George frolic through the snow while telling everybody and everything "Merry Christmas" just makes you want to go outside and play in a blizzard.

Top ten snow day movies #5: Christmas Vacation

Christmas Vacation is the Music from A Charlie Brown Christmas of holiday movies in that you can watch it any month of the year and it's still really, really awesome. I live having Christmas Vacation on during a snow day as I can crank the volume up, get stuff done around the apartment and laugh at all the right moments even if I'm not actually viewing the TV at that particular time.

Non-Christmas snow day movies

Top ten snow day movies #6: Field of Dreams

You baseball fans know what I'm talking about. It's early February, there's two feet of snow on the ground and you're just longing to read the words "pitchers and catchers have reported." The flow, story and acting in Field of Dreams make it the ultimate winter baseball movie, one that I recommend for all baseball fans before the start of spring training.

Top ten snow day movies #7: The Mighty Ducks

I'm talkin' the first one, not the overrated second one or underrated (yeah, I said it) third one. Mighty Ducks is a hockey movie that's just meant for watching on a day that you can't leave your house due to an epic snowfall. Watching it is also a great way to entertain kids that are bugging you about being bored during a snow day.

Top ten snow day movies #8: Sleepless in Seattle

Sure, the movie starts around Christmastime but it's hardly a "holiday movie." What I like about Sleepless and Seattle is that it's a snow day movie you can put on while you play a board game or surf the Web. There's also more than enough humor to keep you entertained if the sappy love story genre just isn't your thing.

Top ten snow day movies #9: Forget Paris

Forget Paris is the perfect snow day movie for any couple. The ladies, such as the wife, will enjoy the love story aspect of the movie. Fellas will laugh at the whole "you lost my dead father?!?" humor and get a kick out of the cameos by several notable NBA players from yesteryear. Seriously, Billy Crystal as an NBA ref? Win.

Top ten snow day movies #10: House Arrest

A movie that's so awful it's awesome. Basically, kids kidnap bickering parents, parents make up, some dude gets to make out with Jennifer Love Hewitt. House Arrest actually has a surprisingly great cast that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Pollack, Christopher McDonald and Jennifer Tilly. This movie is a fine way to waste 90-or-so minutes of a snow day.
