2. "It's A Great Life" (1968)-A song cut from the "Stoned Soul Picnic" album. The lyrics are positive and uplifting, and of course, great harmonies! It's a "feel good" tune.
3. "Light Sings All Over The World" (1971)-I think this song was from the off-Broadway musical "The Me Nobody Knows". The single didn't make the top 40. It should have. It should have been a top ten hit!
4. "Stoned Soul Picnic" (1968) was no. 3 smash, written by Laura Nyro, one of the two hottest songwriters that year (Jimmy Webb was the other one). Legend has it that the group recorded this partly due to criticism among some militant blacks that their sound was "too white". No further comment here.
5. "Sweet Blindness" (1968) was a no. 13 hit, also written by Laura Nyro("BottleOf Wine" by The Fireballs was also a big hit this year-A recurring theme perhaps?).
6. "Bobby's Song (Who Do You Think Of?)"-This was the flip or B side to "Sweet Blindness", a wistful ballad. I often wondered if it was about Bobby Kennedy. It may not be, but I'd like to think it is.
7. "California My Way" (maybe 1967)-I think this song was from the "Up Up AndAway" album. This is one of the few groups whose album cuts were just as good, if not better, than the released singles.
8. "Those Were The Days" (1969)-Another excellent cut from "The Age Of Aquarius" album; this was a cover of the Mary Hopkin classic (More uptempo and more harmonic, with Billy Davis Jr. on lead ).
9. "If I Could Reach You" (1972)-a no. 10 smash, featuring Marilyn McCoo on the lead vocal. She made this beautiful ballad come alive!
10. "Up-Up And Away" (1967), was a no. 7 smash, the group's first top ten hit, and the one that gave them national and international fame, not to mention winning several Grammys (They first entered the top 40 with "Go Where You Wanna Go", a no. 13 hit, a cover of The Mamas and The Papas' original version). The Fifth Dimension were often compared to The Mamas and The Papas during their early fame, but they DID have their own distinct sound. The 5th Dimension consisted of Marilyn McCoo (Davis),-She married fellow group member Billy Davis Jr., Lamont McLemore, Florence LaRue (Gordon),-She married the group's manager, Marc Gordon, and Ron Townson.
