Top Ten Songs by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys

Hillbilly Music at Its Best

Jack Tilt
Those of you who follow old country, swing and hillbilly music are surely familiar with Bob Wills and his 'Boys. Otherwise, you might have heard his name somewhere, but don't know a-thing about him. Or you might not have even heard his name. But you should know his name, and his music. He is great. He is one of the most influential country musicians of all time, and his music some of the best. So check it out: these are his top ten songs.

10. Time changes everything- Yes it does. Everything but this song!

9. I'm gonna be boss from now on - A very funny song about who wears the pants in the relationship. Ultimately, we see that he is being somewhat sarcastic, and then feel better when we recognize our own sad fate.

8. New Spanish Two-Step - "The new Spanish two-step soft and low;" it's a romantic song that brings you back to an older, easier, seemingly more peaceful time. It's a fun little musical trip.

7. Bring it on down to my house - "Bring it on down to my house, honey, ain't nobody home but me." You have to hear it in the right context!

6. I can't go on this way - In the tradition of the brokenhearted country singer, this one is cream of the crop, makes everything seem a-okay because he's doing all the suffering. It's funny, sweet, poetic and ironic. A great song.

5. New San Antonio Rose/Take me back to Tulsa - Two of his bigger hits, they aren't my personal favorites, but I suppose they belong on the list. "Take me back to Tulsa, I'm too young to marry;" again, you have to hear them (all of them) in the right context!

4. Sitting on top of the world - He didn't write this great song, but he created a great version of it.

3. It's my lazy day - This is a song for just about any occasion, a feel good song, a man's rights song, a workingman's song, a perfect song!

2. Little Liza Jane - He sang about a lot of things, but his best songs were either about a girl he loved, or about a girl he loved to hate, or hated to love - can't tell. This one is about one he loved, and it's fun, so fun that even Dr. John, Big Mac, the Nighttripper did a version of it (and a great version, by the way).

1. The girl I left behind me - "Rosy cheeks and curly hair, the girl I left behind me." It's actually, to me, one of the best songs ever, from anyone and anywhere. Just a pure joy to listen to, in so many ways.
