Top Ten Songs by Matt Redman

Matt's Songs Are Firmly Focused on God..

Jesus Saves
Matt Redman is one of the few artists who actually write their own songs. Not only is he a good singer, his songs are also deep, meaningful and thought provoking. There are very few artists who manage to bring such praise and worship in their music so beautifully. All of his songs are absolutely incredible and I love listening to them and rejoicing in the beauty of the Lord that they try to display. That's the best part about his songs I guess, the focus in not on the song, the lyrics, or his voice, but on the One who truly matters - Jesus.
His Top 3 songs are:

Blessed Be Your Name - One of the most famous songs out there, 'Blessed be Your Name' takes it's name and theme from Job's life. When faced with more than any human has probably ever had to face, Job fell on his face and cried - "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return! The Lord gave and the Lord took away! Blessed be the name of the Lord!" As such, the song shows how shamelessly shallow our "christianity" is. We see God as the cosmic blesser, and when things don't go out way, we just get mad at God, or go to the extent of claiming that He doesn't even exist, all because He didn't do what we wanted.

Let My Words Be Few - We often fall into the trap of making long fancy sounding prayers, or giving long spiritual speeches, or even just talking on and on about what it means to follow God. However, we often miss the most important part of loving God - Him. 'Let My Words Be Few' is a wonderful song that brings our attention back to the fact that we're nothing compared to God, and all He has desired of us is loving obedience. The chorus of the song says it all:

So I'll let my words be few,
Jesus, I am so in love with You.
And I'll stand in awe of You,
And I'll let my words be few,
Jesus, I am so in love with You.

The Wonderful Cross - I can't count the number of times I've given into sin and temptation, and doubted God and my salvation and what Jesus did for humanity on the cross. At those moments, it's important to take the focus off of me and turn to God. To look at the cross and realize the grace that was poured out on a wretched sinner such as me. When the full force of the fact that it was Jesus, God's own Son, fully God, who died on that cross, who gave up His life to reconcile the world to God hits you, there's no way that you don't change. It's almost uncontrollable. God's love is too deep and majestic for a human to comprehend, but somehow this songs manges to present a fraction of that love in a way that is without a doubt, endearing. The best way to explain what the song is about, is to give you a sample of the lyrics:

When, I survey, the wondrous cross,
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Oh the wonderful cross,
Oh the wonderful cross,
Bids me come and die,
And find that I may truly live.
Oh the wonderful cross,
Oh the wonderful cross,
All who gather here, by grace draw near,
And bless you name.

Matt Redman is one of my favorite worship leaders, along with Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche and Darlene Zschech. We use several of his songs at our church--mostly in the youth services. My favorite songs by him include "The Heart of Worship," "Let My Words Be Few" and "Blessed Be Your Name."
