The Best Songs by Rich Mullins

Luke Porter

Rich Mullins was an incredible gift to Christian music. Rich spent most of his life teaching Native American children music and ministering the gospel of Jesus Christ to Indians on a reservation. Rich died in 1997 in a car accident, but his legacy of a life lead for Jesus Christ still lives on through his music.

The best song created by Rich Mullins, "How can I keep Myself from Singing" comes from His Album "Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth." In this song Rich sings about the glory of God. The Lord is sure to come back and take over the world and set up a new kingdom of His very own. Rich is so ecstatic at the thought and expectation of this future reality he exclaims "How can I keep myself from singing!" The Lyrics of this song really put this into perspective:

I feel my heart my heart is beating

It has a rhythm strong and sure

And in the Name that brought me healing

I pray for a healing of this world

And I know sacred ears will listen

And holy hands reach out to touch

How can I keep myself from singing

Hallelujah! (Hallelujah!)

The 2nd best song created by Rich Mullins, "Awesome God" comes from His Album "Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth." This song is one of Rich's most popular songs and is widely performed by Christian musicians the world over. The song has a wonderful rhythm and melody that is hard to forget. The words are also incredible. The rhyming lyrics help engrain the song's message into your heart as you listen to it. The chorus of this song is the centerpiece of the work:

Our God is an awesome God

He reigns from heaven above

With wisdom, power, and love

Our God is an awesome God

The 3rd best song created by Rich Mullins, "If I stand" comes from His Album "Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth." This song by Rich Mullins is all about standing on the promises of God, and realizing that there is grace if we ever fall. The song is a wonderful testimony to the steadfast faith that was demonstrated by Rich during His life. It reveals the heart of God in a unique and intricate way.

The 4th best song created by Rich Mullins, "The Just Shall Live" comes from His Album "The World as Best as I Remember It." The just do indeed live by faith. After being born again, it is a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ that gives a man a right standing with God. When one has faith, the blood of Jesus covers their sin. Rich describes this interesting truth in this song. Although we are weak at times, it is the faith we possess that pleases God. The following lyrics from this song illustrate this point:

For the Lord looks down on the sons of men
To hear the cries of the innocent
And the guilty will not stand
For the day of reckoning soon will come
And the whole world will see justice done
By the Lord's almighty hand

The 5th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Ready for the Storm" comes from His Album "Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth" This song describes the resolve every Christian must have when leading their lives. The devil is real and he is not playing games. Satan is only interested in taking your soul into an eternity of torment. Satan knows his time is short and he too will be burning forever in the lake of everlasting fire. The song is a great reminder of this truth and helps those who hear it stand strong against the wiles of the devil. I think these lyrics really put this into perfect perspective:

The distance it is no real friend
And time will take its time
And you will find that in the end
It brings you me
This lonely sailor
And when You take me by the hand
And You love me, Lord, You love me
And I should have realized
I had no reasons to be frightened

The 6th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Creed" comes from His Album "A Liturgy, a Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band." This song is a wonderful song with lyrics of the apostle's creed. It is thus entitled "Creed" because of this use of the apostle's creed.

The 7th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Screen Door" comes from His Album "Songs." This song is truly hilarious. In "Screen Door" Rich Mullins uses an analogy of a screen door on a submarine to characterize faith that has no works. Faith without works is useless as this song's primary analogy makes so abundantly clear.

The 8th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Brother's Keeper" comes from His Album "Brother's Keeper." This song is about how Christians need to love and look after one another. We are called to be our brother's keeper, and not act like Cain who killed his brother Able and said to the Lord, "Am I my brother's keeper?"

The 9th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Step by Step" comes from His Album "The World as Best as I Remember It, Volume 1." This song is wonderful because it talks about how the Lord is always pleased with those who follow him and walk step by step in faith. It is a wonderful, encouraging song.

The 10th best song created by Rich Mullins, "Growing Young" comes from His Album "The World As Best As I Remember It, Volume 2." Instead of growing old, when we follow the Lord we grow young. Although our bodies age, our soul is revived and restored everyday as we walk with Jesus. The following lyrics illustrate this point quite well:

Well we are children no more, we have sinned and grown old
And our Father still waits and He watches down the road
To see the crying boys come running back to His arms
And be growing young
Growing young

Rich Mullins was, and still is, my favorite songwriter of all-time. I saw him perform a couple of times during the late 80's/early 90's at Greenville College in Illinois as well as at the Ichthus Festival in Wilmore, Kentucky. My overall favorite is "Hold Me Jesus."
