Trying to select just ten favorite songs from Toby Keith's extensive library is a tall order, but I've taken a stab at it. Below is a list of some favorites…great tunes all, but surely some equally great songs have been left off. Regardless, this list should provide a reminder of great tunes for Keith's fans, and a great introduction to the artist for those who aren't familiar with his work.
Beer for My Horses - A duet with country legend Willy Nelson, this track is about vigilante justice, hard-drinking tough guys, and hard-drinking tough horses. "Whiskey for my men, and beer for my horses" is the call that goes up to the bartenders after the bad guys are all dealt with.
How Do You Like Me Now - A fun fantasy song…sung to the girl in high school who was too cool to give you the time of day. I imagine being a huge star makes the idea of attending a high school reunion a bit more palatable.
Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American) - An angry, driven, patriotic reaction to September 11th hasn't lost a thing in the five years since. This song stirred up plenty of controversy when it was released, but I can't imagine that every once in a while, most Americans don't want to kick some terrorist butt.
You Ain't Much Fun - A fun, fast irreverent tune about the negative effects that prolonged sobriety can have on a relationship. "You ain't much fun since I quit drinking" probably isn't the thing to say to the lady in your life, I'd imagine.
Should've Been a Cowboy - Keith's first big hit, this song hit #1 in 1993 and helped push his debut album to double platinum. A great escape song…a wistful lament about a career choice. This song is, quite simply, a lot of fun.
As Good As I Once Was - A light hearted look at the aging process, where whether the subject is lovin, fightin, or livin it up, "I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once, as I ever was."
I Love This Bar - An ode to the neighborhood bar, a place where people of all kinds gather to drink, talk, and relax. An instant karaoke classic and in it's own way, a touching love song for the local watering hole.
Whisky Girl - A guitar driven song that's a tribute to the lady who's discerning tastes call for a bit stronger drink than most can handle. A great driving song.
Get Drunk and Be Somebody - A fun, lively blue-color, low-man-on-the-totem-pole anthem. Even if the boss doesn't know your name, you can still be "somebody" at the bar on Friday night.
She Ain't Hooked on Me No More - A classic breakup song about the end of a relationship between a "good girl" and a "bad boy". A duet with country music legend Merle Haggard.
Of course, with such a large library of songs to pick from, this list just begins to scrape the surface of Toby Keith's catalog. A few more great tunes to check out include "Who's Your Daddy?", "I Wanna Talk About Me", "Country Comes to Town", "American Soldier", "HonkeyTonk U", and many, many more.
