1. Heat
Just like you would dress for a night out, make sure you dress for the heat. Make sure your clothing is loose fitting, and breathes well, such as cotton.
2. Dehydration
It is necessary to drink at least 8 glasses of fluid everyday. Drink your fluid periodically throughout the day. This will help to keep your body hydrated, and working properly.
3. Alcohol consumption
While it is hot, it is best not to consume alcohol. It works as a diuretic, and cause the body to loose much needed hydration.
4. Sun
If you are going to be outside, wear light colored clothing to reflect the sun, and not dark colors that seem to attract the sun's heat. Wearing a hat when outdoors will help to protect your head from the sun and heat, and sunglasses will help to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. For exposed skin, use a good sunscreen with a protection level of at least SPF 30.
5. Medication
Some medications make the body more sensitive to the effect of the sun. If you are taking medication, ask your pharmacist if any of your medications make it necessary for you to stay out of the sun.
6. Fatigue
The days are longer during the summer, and seniors can fit in more things to do. Make sure to take plenty of rest breaks during the heat of the day.
7. Exercise
If you like to garden or go for walks for exercise, do this either first thing in the morning or in the evening when the sun is not so hot. It will help to keep you from getting too fatigued.
8. Nutrition
Because seniors are more active during the summer months; they naturally have an increased activity level, but don't think to increase their caloric intake. It is important to match the activity level with the calories consumed to keep energy levels up.
9. Falls
Because activity levels have increased for seniors during the summer months, so has the potential for falls. Wear good, supportive shoes when out walking around, and if something needs to be done while on a ladder have someone do it for you.
10. Stay Indoors
Avoid going outside when it is extremely hot. Make sure that you have good air circulation, and if at all possible, try to get an air conditioner. It will certainly make the heat more bearable.
