1. The Notebook (). I doubt anyone would argue with me that this is one of the most romantic movies of all time. Can you imagine loving a woman so much that you stick by her side even when she gets dementia and no longer remembers who you are? In The Notebook, the gentleman, Noah, loves his wife so much. She has written down all kinds of memories of the two of them together, and he reads the notes to her all the time. He wants her to remember their lives together. Sometimes, she realizes the story is about them, and sometimes she doesn't. Noah has to wait for those scarce opportunities when she makes the connection. He lives for them. He loves her so much, he has stood by her through all of this.
2. Dear John (2010). I just viewed this movie this evening. It was quite touching. The basic story is that a guy and girl meet and fall for each other in two short weeks on vacation. The girl is going back to college, and the guy is in the army overseas. They promise to write to each other all the time, for the next twelve months until they can be reunited. Towards the end of the year, the two towers are hit in New York, and the guy realizes that his whole unit is going to volunteer to extend their tour of duty. And he was just about to be able to be with her forever. Well, what can he do? He reenlists, and the two try to keep it together. Imagine the Dear John letter he receives when she decides she can't wait any longer. The touching part of this movie comes when John actually decides to sacrifice something very important of his for her new man, just so she can find some brief happiness. I don't find myself crying much when watching a movie, but I don't think anyone with a heart could get through this one without at least a couple of tissues! This is what I call a real man, a real gentleman.
3. Last of the Mohicans (1992). Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe are in American during the French and Indian War. Lewis has agreed to help the colonists fight in the war, reluctantly. He ends up with the job to escort two English sisters back to their father, an important person in the English military. All of them end up being captured by the Indians, and he has to come up with a plan to save Stowe. He says that no matter what it takes, he will find her. This is so romantic, but it is more than that. It is about a man who has dedicated his heart to a woman, and he will save her life at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing his own. There are not many men in the movies or in real life that can fit this bill!
4. Ghost (1990). Demi Moore was lucky to have a man who cared about her so much in Patrick Swayze. Now, he couldn't say "I love you," but he did love her. "Ditto" was just his way of showing it. Once he died in the movie, he had to find a way to save her from danger. So, he contacted a psychic, Whoopi Goldberg. From the realm of death, he was able to let Whoopi know what was going on, and she could relay this to Demi. Well, it wasn't just this easy, but you get the point. The movie is a true story of a dedicated husband who, even once he has died, stays true to protecting his wife.
5. Love Story (1970). This may not be a movie you have seen, unless you were watching movies in the 1970's. This 70's classic romance tale is about a rich teenage guy who falls for a beautiful, yet much poorer girl. The two fall in love, and marry despite the rich guy's family being against it. Of course, he is cut off from his inheritance. Soon, it is discovered that the girl is dying, and her hospital bills are going to be expensive. Will the guy make up with his family to get money to pay her bills? Will it be in time? This romantic tale shows how a guy is willing to sacrifice his family, his money, and in the end, his pride just for the love of his life. Find me something more romantic than this! What a gentleman.
6. Sweet Home Alabama (2002). Reese Witherspoon certainly didn't know what she had until it was gone. She just wanted to get out of Alabama, and get somewhere where everything mattered. Or so she thought. She went to New York, found a great new guy, and... Wait a minute! She's still married to someone in Alabama. Okay, so road trip, right? A simple little trip back to the homeland to get a quick signature, and then she's free. The only problem is, he still loves her. He never stopped. He went to New York to find her, but found that he was no match for the city of successful men. He decided to come back and make something of himself. That's exactly what he did, just for her. This gentleman, or super man, made love a priority and helped it turn around his life. And, even though she left him, he stuck with her in his heart no matter what.
7. The Butterfly Effect (2004). Ahshton Kutcher plays Evan Treborn, who is able to change the past by going back in time. He can do this when he reads words from his journal that he kept during that time. He keeps trying to change things to make them better. His main efforts always focus on changing things to be better for his love interest, played by Amy Smart. It is so super man- like how he always puts her first when he changes things. The last time he changes things, he ends up in bad shape, but she finally has the life she deserves. This makes him happy. What a gentleman. This is not a movie you would initially think fits the bill for this top ten list, but watch it again, and you'll understand.
8. The Color Purple (1985). Whoopi Goldberg was raped by her father, and had two babies by him. These babies were ripped from her, and given up for adoption. Then, Whoopi was sent to become the wife to Danny Glover, whose wife had died. I'm sure you're asking yourself, what gentleman do we find in this movie? Danny Glover played this awful husband, who took advantage of his wife and had a mistress right in front of her. Well, the reason Danny Glover gets a spot on this list is because of his growth, from a monster to a super man. In the end, he redeems himself for what he did to her, and helps her be able to see her children again. The movie to me shows that a man can finally come to grips with the life he has led, and change himself to make things better for everyone.
9. War of the Worlds ( 2005). In this movie, Tom Cruise is a single father trying to parent his children the best he can when it's his turn to see him. Tom is a super man because he does everything possible in the world to save his children from the alien lifeforms that have invaded earth, and he gets his children back safely home to their mother. That is called serious dedication!
10. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006). Will Smith is truly a super man in this movie. His wife leaves him, and leaves his son with him. Now, he has to take care of this child. Well, times are tough. He doesn't have a home or job, and doesn't know what to do. He isn't going to give up on his son and family, so he struggles to find a way to make everything come together. Some other guys might just have tossed in the towel, but not him.
