1. The Time Traveler's Wife (2009). I just watched this movie today. Yes, it made me cry? Why? Eric Bana, the husband, has a genetic disorder that makes him travel through time. He can't control where he goes or when. All he knows for sure is that he loves Claire (Rachel McAdams). His time travels take her to different times, when she is a child and when she is an adult. The two get married, and have to go through rough times dealing with his disappearances and reappearances. This is a tearjerker movie because it is so hard to face the disappearances, and what ultimately ends up happening.
2. Family Man (2000). Family Man stars Nicholas Cage, one of our favorite heartthrobs. The movie is about a man who gets a glimpse of what his life could have been, one with a family. The movie is emotional because once the glimpse is over, he no longer can have this family. He realizes he lived his life wrong, and now what can he do to make the glimpse become a reality?
3. Far and Away (1992). Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise unite in this movie about traveling to a foreign land to make one's dreams come true. The two have incredibly hard times as they fight to survive. It takes forever, but Nicole Kidman finally realizes she loves Tom Cruise, but is it then too late? There is an accident. Will one of them die, leaving the other alone without his or her soulmate? The defining moment is a real tearjerker.
4. Good Will Hunting (1997). Robin Williams, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in this movie about a young man who has never fulfilled his dreams due to past unresolved childhood issues. He gets a chance to confront his inner demons, and falls in love during the process. But, will he let her go and forget about his dreams, or let the past be the past and pursue them? The outcome, as well as the process, are very emotional.
5. Legends of the Fall (1994). This movie stars Brad Pitt. Three brothers over time are all in love with the same woman. One marries her, then the other catches her after he dies in the war, and then finally she ends up with the third when the second leaves to go 'find himself.' The movie is really about tragedy, the tragedy of war and of not being able to be with your true love because that person has to be on his or her own for awhile. What happens in this movie is sure to make one shed a tear or two.
6. Intersection (1994). Richard Gere was married, and now he is divorced. He has never gotten over his exwife. He has this beautiful new woman, but he can never fully accept her into his life because of the feelings he has for his exwife. He is at the crossroads of two loves. The is a truly heartfelt and emotional movie, as the events unfold where he may never get a chance to choose between the two.
7. Jerry Maguire (1996). Tom Cruise makes the list a second time. What is it about this heartthrob that gets us every time? In Jerry Maguire, Renee Zellweger has given up everything to work for her new boss, Tom Cruise. She then finds herself falling in love with him after the two of them have intercourse after a date. But is he in love with her, or just her son and the idea of her? After the two marry, Renee realizes that he may have never loved her. She sets him free. Will he come back? The famous line from this movie is, "You had me at hello," so you guess.
8. The Notebook (2004). In this movie, two people fall in love and share a wonderful life together, after many years of trials and tribulations. Later, the woman develops Alzheimer's, and most of the time can't even remember who her husband is. But, she wrote this great journal about their time together, and he reads it to her to get her to remember. There are many tearjerking moments, when you see the woman remember and then forget her true love. This is an unforgettable emotional movie.
9. Patch Adams (1998). Patch Adams is about a nontraditional medical student who decides to open up a practice to help those who can't afford medical care. He uses humor to heal people and make them feel better. He is practically a saint, giving his life to helping others. He has this great girl at his side, another doctor, to help him. The two fall in love and are together. A tragedy occurs, and we learn from this movie that no matter how much good you do for others, you can't necessarily be guaranteed a life free from loss and pain. Watching this movie will make it clear what this means.
10. Steel Magnolias (1989). An allstar cast including Dolly Parton, Sally Fields, Julia Roberts and Daryl Hannah team up for a movie about the strength of women. Sally Field's daughter, Julia Roberts in the movie, turns out to have a medical condition in which she shouldn't have children. However, Julia Roberts wants nothing more, and so she sets out to prove everyone wrong. She has her baby, but what will this do to her body? What happens in the movie is sure to well up some tears from even the most hardened soul.
