Top Ten Thanksgiving Playlist for the Non-Traditional

Angela Colley
Looking to add a little spunk to your Thanksgiving gathering? With the onslaught of food, family, football and place settings, we often overlook the extras like background music. Especially on Thanksgiving when we aren't bombarded by Christmas Carols and holiday inspired CD's at every turn. Yet, setting the mood is key to every great meal, and thanks to one of the many wonders of the digital age, MP3s, the right play list is possible. Start your search with my top ten list of jazz inspired Thanksgiving songs, and you are on your way to the perfect Thanksgiving meal.

1. Thanksgiving, by Charles Earland. An upbeat, jazzy tune sure to start your Thanksgiving Day on the right track. Charles Earland will get you up and cooking in no time.

2. Be Thankful, by Natalie Cole. Natalie Cole's voice is soothing and this song reminds us all to be thankful for what we've got. Simple, direct and to the point. This tune will kick start your family's thankful speeches.

3. Low Gravy, by the Chenille Sisters. A heavenly, soulful and light hearted song about Gravy. This tune is a definite add. After all, it can even help you cook.

4. Autumn Leaves (Live), by Miles Davis. Typically, I don't promote live recordings. I think the quality is too low for a standard play list. Yet, Miles Davis is classic, and this instrumental is sure to set a festive mood.

5. I've Got Plenty to be Thankful For, by Bing Crosby. No holiday is complete without Bing and this track fits the mood of the day. Play this tune during your grazing and let Bing show you how to give thanks.

6. I'm a Pilgrim, by Soul Stirrers. A classic blue grass theme done by a great Gospel group, what's not to love? The Soul Stirrers were instrumental in their industry. While the lyrics to this song can be depressing, the soulful singing of this group balances it out.

7. Carvin' the Bird, By Charlie Parker. This perky blues piece will brighten your table and help calm your nerves amongst the clattering of in-laws and fine china.

8. Shine on Harvest Moon, By Betty Crocker. This song just feels like Autumn. It conjures up memories of taking long walks in the crisp breeze under moonlit foliage. Well, maybe that's just me, but Betty's version is sure to add spirit to your table either way.

9. Sweet Potato Pie, By Ray Charles. Ok, so he's not singing about America's favorite dish. Either way, Ray Charles can belt one out, and what is a better compliment to sweet potato pie then a great American singer?

10. Thanksgiving Theme, by The Vince Guaraldi Trio. Maybe it's not befitting the theme of the rest of the list but Charlie Brown is a classic staple on my play lists from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
