Top Ten Ways to Celebrate October 10 - 10/10/10 Celebrations & Special Events

In Honor of 2010's 10/10/10, Here Are Ten Ways to Celebrate October 10

Kathryn E. Darden
In 2010, Sunday October the 10th was 10/10/10. I thought it would be fun to consider ten ways to celebrate 10-10-10 or October 10 of any year! Here are ten ten ways to make 10-10 a festive fall event!

10-10 - Columbus Day Preparations

1. Prepare the last-minute details for your Columbus Day celebration on 10/10/10. Columbus Day occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar. Whichever date you choose, it's time to get the Columbus Day party started!

10-10 - Upcoming October Events

2. Plan ahead for other upcoming October events including: Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day - October 15; World Food Day - October 16; Alaska Day - October 18; Apple Day - October 21; United Nations Day - October 24; Navy Day (United States) - October 27; and, of course, Halloween - October 31.

10-10 - Learn to Count to 10 in Another Language

3. Learn the Metric System. Learn to count to ten in another language on 10/10/10. I chose Spanish in honor of Columbus Day:

1 uno

2 dos

3 tres

4 cuatro

5 cinco

6 seis

7 siete

8 ocho

9 nuove

10 diez

10-10 - October Originally Eighth Month

4. Speaking of numbers, remind someone that October was originally the eighth month in the old Roman calendar and got its name from Latin, "octo" meaning "eight."

10-10 - Buy an Opal

5. Buy yourself or someone you love an opal. The opal is the birthstone for October.

10-10 - Month-Long Observations

6. Remember that October is also the month-long observation of Filipino American History Month; National Arts & Humanities Month; Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

10-10 - Fall Decorations & Pumpkin Pie

7. Get your fall decorations out. Buy a fall pumpkin or two for decorations and an extra to bake a pumpkin pie.

10-10 - Buy Some Calendula

8. Get some pretty calendula to put in a put or vase. The calendula is yellow daisy, also called a pot marigold, which is the official flower of October.

10-10 - Fall Back & Fertilizer

9. Remember Fall Back is not in October this year and that in gardening a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer contains 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphate and 10 percent potash.

10-10 - Visit a Local Church

10. Since 10/10/10 is on a Sunday in 2010, celebrate the Lord's day at the church of your choice. Most churches have both morning and evening services.
