Top Ten Web Searched Trends of 2009

Brooklyn Trenten
We all spend a fair amount of time searching the web right? Well, it only seems right to know what the rest of the world was searching for. And it seems as though some of them got high on the searches in no time at all. For quite some time, Britney Spears showed up as the highest searched subject on the Internet. Well, move over Britney. According to Internet search trends, Michael Jackson was the highest searched person of 2009.

#1: Michael Jackson

It's funny; the famous King of Pop himself got more searches when he died then when he was alive, put together. Weird right? Well, if you think about it, he brought a signature sound every time and no less when he died, most thought it to be a conspiracy or maybe even suicide. So of course he got searched a ton. And maybe it's like Kanye West. Twitter trends say #RIPKanyeWest yet he's still living. So for a little while (until it was confirmed) some thought it to be a hoax. I don't blame them. People will do strange things to appear back in the tabloids.

What came to mind is that, was he releasing a new album? Well, maybe maybe not. But I do know he was working on a large tour that would've raked in large dollars guaranteed. Though he's no longer in the tabs, I bet he's still influencing our music world.

#2: Twilight

It came as no surprise to me that the new hit series 'Twilight' made it to #2 on most searched topic of 2009. Love it or hate it, it's been the fastest growing hit series. Outdoing High School Musical with it's paraphernalia that anyone from the age of infant to well over adult seem to be wearing. But in case you don't know what it's about, here it is. The show centers on high schooler Bella Swan, who has a romance with a vampire (Edward), whose fictional story trailed out into four books, and shortly thereafter into a show. But, in no time at all, the show began to be such a hit; teens were getting into fights over it. They established 'teams'. Team Edward (Robert Pattison) and team Jacob (Taylor Lautner). To those of us who aren't fans, this quite frankly seems ridiculous, but like it or not, it's a hot topic.

#3: WWE

Though it would seem useless to search for such topics, it made it to number three. WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) seems usually rigged and overdramatic. But it seems as though that's what people look for; drama, face-offs, and screaming fans and painted signs supporting the sport where people get paid to hurt each other. Seems slightly vandal like don't you think? Apparently not to Mattel because they're teaming up with WWE and trying to draw a younger crowd to WWE. We're all hoping they tone down their acts a violence just a smidge for the young and influenced crowd.

#4 Megan Fox

Any person bold enough to bash the very movie that made them famous is definitely worthy of being one of the top searched right? That's right, the girl that used to be dressed as a banana, and serving smoothies at a smoothie shop dared to make fun of 'Transformers'. She thought she could make it in more 'sophisticated films. Baloghney. So she filmed the movie 'Jennifer's Body'. The movie suffered miserably at the box office and suddenly robots from another planet don't seem so bad.

#5 Britney Spears

Here's what you call impressive. Britney Spears held the top searched for four years! Yup, four years. Seems like a pretty long time for someone who can't sing without auto tune and serious altering. She did things such as attempt to marry foreigners, get into tiffs with her family and shave her head to keep herself in the tabloids. Whether she was trying or not, she was a major topic for a long time. But finally, in 2009, the King of Pop himself (dead or not) dropped her down to not number two, but number five. Still, despite her crazy antics she showed us what she can do. Her 'Circus' tour went global in no time at all, and her songs are making top of the worldwide song charts. Bravo, Britney.

#6 Naruto

Though most of us haven't a clue who he is, he was most searched. And that may be why. But to the avid manga fans, Naruto is like Batman to them. He supplied them with all the dramatic action that leads to a gazillion products: all featuring Naruto. But why in the world would anyone care? Well, let me explain. Naruto is a half pint kid trying to become the great ninja in the land, wherever that land may be, whilst dealing with the typical problems of your typical soap. Girls, friends, peer pressure and second thoughts. Maybe it makes sense now. If not, feel free to Google it. It seems everyone else did.

#7 American Idol

To my surprise American Idol only came in at number seven. I was thinking by now it might be more at number three, but either way. The show that tons of famous celebrities have made knock off's of is the most popular music drama show on TV. And a lot of people have had big success off of American Idol such as Carrie Underwood, David Archuleta, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. And of course many more, but those are the ones that come to mind. No less, people watch it for the hysterical bits of news and breakdowns people have on the show. Such as the fact that Paula Abdul is resigning and Ellen Degeneres is replacing her. Seems like an unlikely fit to me but, let's leave it to the judges to pick that.

#8 Kim Kardashian

Only recently has the world used Kim Kardashian as an everyday name. She's mostly known for her show, 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians', which is apparently the 'Brady Bunch' for the new century. The news media buzzed when she broke up with and then got back together with NFL player Reggie Bush, and released a perfume line. She quotes that "There's a lot of baggage that comes with us, but it's like Louis Vuitton baggage. You always want it." Or, most want it.

#9 NASCAR

It's no surprise they made the list. With the major events going on the web out to be buzzing about it. And so it was. Jimmie Jonson (34 years old) became NASCAR'S golden boy as they put it. He broke a record by winning his 4th Sprint Cup championship in a row. Then, 24-year-old Kyle Busch became prepped for his first ever Nationwide Series title, and 51-year-old Ron Hornaday broke a record to receive his fourth Trucks Series. No less he's the oldest NASCAR champ of all time. Pretty impressive year for NASCAR.

#10 RUNESCAPE

It's a rather confusing name. It's apparently the only game that can't be played on Xbox, Wii, or Playstation 3. It's slightly reminiscent of World of War craft. Except it's even more popular (which is why I'd never heard of it) and the best part? It's free. Supposedly it's not the first year it's topped some gaming charts. It launched in 2001, and since then has gathered a staggering number of users, there's at least a few million. And last but not least, Guinness Book of World Records named it 'the most popular, free MMORPG in the world'. Someone was a genius.
