Top Ten Worst Horror Movie Remakes

From Halloween to Psycho

JM Van Horn
When discussing horror movies, there are times when directors can bring new life to an old classic horror tale. These are ten examples where it would have been better to let us enjoy the original version.

The Omen

In 2006, horror movie fans saw the release of The Omen 30 years after the original shocked us as Damien was unleashed upon the world. The horror remake used the original screenplay by David Seltzer and did not deviate from the original story line. The biggest flaw between the two was the original Damien and how he transformed from a sweet boy into a pint size devil.

Halloween

The moment Michael Myers made his debut in the horror film genre, fans fell involve with the silent killer who they knew only bits and pieces of. Along came Rob Zombie who tried to give a face to Myers and show us why he turned out the way he was. Zombie failed to realize why horror fans loved the character to begin with, making his horror movie remake one of the worst in recent years.

The Fog

Though the original horror movie by John Carpenter may not go down as one of the greatest movies of all time, it did deliver when it was released. The remake did little to capture the environment Carpenter created in the first movie and failed to deliver on every level aside from the eye candy that were thrust into the lead roles.

House of Wax

The original version was released in 1953 and became a horror movie classic over time. Even with the advancements in movie theatrics, there was no saving this horror film that had an average cast and an even worst script. The only bright sport is this horror remake was when Paris Hilton met her untimely end.

Psycho

There are times when movie directors need to seriously question their motives when they take on remaking a horror movie, especially one of the greatest of all time, Psycho. Gus Van Sant tried to stay true to the original screenplay but it is a lost cause and fails to bring forth the same terror in movie goers.

The Haunting

While the original movie was a suspenseful ghost story, the remake turned into a film that could not be saved by the star power of Liam Neeson, Owen Wilson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Instead of trying to let the story itself terrify the movie goers, the horror remake tried to scare us more with the effects.

When a Stranger Calls

This horror remake tried to recapture the fear created when the original movie was first released back in 1979. Instead of being able to deliver upon the complete terror of a babysitter left home alone, it left horror fans with a few quick scares and nothing more.

Prom Night

When it comes to the worst horror remakes on this list, Prom Night is one movie where the remark version was based loosely, very loosely on the original. They tossed in the typical horror movie clichés with the hope that the updated version would have enough sizzle to capture the horror fans interest. Instead they failed and created another forgettable horror movie from recent years.

The Amityville Horror

The decision to remake another one of the true horror classics resulted in a disastrous affect, especially when it came to the male lead by Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds failed to deliver a performance even half of the original movie that helped terrorize movie goers. This failed horror remake is just another example of the lack of forward thinking in Hollywood and looking for an easy way to make a few extra bucks.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

If you are looking for a point where the recent horror remakes trend started, you can point to the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While this horror remake did deliver substantial gore and violence for horror fans, there was no way possible for it to come close to the original grainy filmed movie that had audiences terrified.
