Top Ten New Years Resolutions: The Lessons of 2009

Camille Atkinson
For some people New Year resolutions are made on a whim, just made for the sake of saying that you did so, or to appease all your friends and family members that can't stop breathing down your neck. For others it is made with true intention and determination to live a better life, yet, by the end of the first three months of the New Year its back to the comfort zones.

For this New Year, we have one of the most eventful years to use as a bench mark. 2009 was definitely the year filled with surprises and disappointments, some which have left a permanent impression in the lives affected. That being said here are the top ten New Year resolutions for 2010:

  1. Go for your dream - where there is a will there is a way to attain any goal. Pinpoint that special goal for 2010 and work towards it...2009 saw the United States with its first black President! Believe that anything is possible.
  2. Celebrate your life - 2009 proved that celebrities are not as invincible as we thought; they are living breathing humans just like any other person. Any one can leave this earth at any given time, status quo has no say. Celebrate your life and the lives of those around you.
  3. Make an impact - a positive impact on any life in any way, big or small. Now is the time that people need each other. A worldwide recession added to the existing tribulations of the world sent a lot of people over the edge. Open your eyes...
  4. Exude loyalty - be true to yourself and your family; we have seen where disloyalty became the epitome of disaster for 2009; take Tiger Woods' lesson and apply it to your own life and to any form of relationship.
  5. Remain stress-free - easier said than done. There is good stress and there is bad stress. Find ways to minimize the latter. Keep your mind as well your body as healthy as possible. Relax rest and recover.
  6. Exercise patience - recognize that many people will have short fuses for the New Year as they enter it with heavy burdens and even heavier hearts. Think before you respond.
  7. Reinvent yourself - if you are unhappy with "you" do not go through another year of being the person you dislike. Love yourself...you know the things about yourself that make you unhappy, the good news is, any problem you have can be alleviated it you resolve to do so.
  8. Become fearless - not adrenalin-junkie fearless, but fearless in the sense of confronting inhibitions, those things that are holding you back with invisible chains and shackles. Break free of your own obstacles in life.
  9. Save more and spend less - bankruptcy is not that far-fetched when you think about it.
  10. Last but not least - whatever you do, do not agree to do a reality series! Just had to put that in there as a New Year resolution to possible candidates. Happy 'resolving'.
