When selecting a scientific calculator, making sure it has the capabilities and functions that you need are very important. With most of us the pricing also plays a huge part in the selection as well.
There are many things to look for in a scientific calculator before selecting one for purchasing. For example, you may prefer one that runs on batteries instead of being solar powered. Some of the scientific calculators have the capabilities of calculating algebra and geometry problems while others are capable of calculating much more complex problems such as trigonometry problems. Having a memory function also may be something to take into consideration.
I have done research and have selected three scientific calculators that are inexpensive but have all the capabilities and functions that most of us will ever need. I have provided a description, review rating, and pricing for each calculator.
The Casio FX-260 is a great solar powered scientific calculator that offers a two line 10 digit display. The top line displays the problem while the bottom line displays the answer to the problem. This calculator offers its user 144 preset functions. It also includes a backup key that allows the user to erase input mistakes with ease. It comes with a hard slide on case to keep it protected. The Casio FX_260 is capable of basic scientific exponential and trigonometric functions as well as single variable statistical calculations. Very detailed instructions with examples are included as well. The overall rating of this calculator given by its users is 4.5 out of 5.0. You can purchase this calculator from $8.00 to $14.99.
The next calculator is the TI 30X IIS. This calculator is also solar powered and comes with a hard snap on cover. There is a backup battery function that is great for making sure you never loose the calculations stored into its memory. The memory function allows searching for previous calculations. The TI 30X IIS allows its user to select settings that best fit their needs. The calculator also has conversion capabilities that allow conversion for fractions/decimals, degrees/radius/grads and DMS/decimals/degrees. It is capable of doing calculations for general math, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and science. Users of this calculator have given it a 4.5 rating out of 5.0. The 30X IIS can be purchased from $10.95 to $24.76 depending on where you purchase it. If this calculator sounds great but you prefer a battery operated calculator then the TI 30X IIB is a great selection, as it is the exact same calculator only battery operated.
The third calculator that I have selected is the HP 30S which is solar powered. The HP 30S offer 250 built in functions and comes with memory that can save up to 10 previous calculations. It is capable of calculating general math, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, and more. This calculator is not only fantastic for calculating almost any problem there is, but it is also fun and colorful. The HP 30S comes with 2 interchangeable color face plates so that the user can customize it to match their personality. This calculator has received a rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 from its users and is highly recommended by college professors. It can be purchased from $8.90 to $18.96.
As you have learned, there are great scientific calculators out there that do not cost and arm and a leg and are just as good as the more expensive ones. Just because they are low cost does not mean that you are losing out on quality.
