Top Three Burger Joints in Brookfield, Wisconsin

B Mathison
There's a time and place for everything. Fine dining has its place in our lives, especially to celebrate big events. Some people enjoy Chinese food for Christmas. The humble burger joint, although best not eaten every day, has a place both in our hearts and our stomachs.

Three of Brookfield's popular restaurants are famous for both their burgers and custard. Casual and offering counter-service, these three are favorites for both visitors and residents of the area:

Kopps Frozen Custard (18880 West Bluemound Road)

Founded in 1950, Kopps is an area landmark known for their custard selection and larger-than-life hamburgers. The Brookfield location (one of three in the greater Milwaukee area), is found on the busy intersection of 188th and Bluemound Road, and is a popular choice for diners in both the summer and winter months. Ample outdoor tables are perfect for warmer, crowded days. A large indoor seating area is great for after-school and after-work gatherings.

Daily menu items include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, fish, and grilled cheese. You can spice up your burger with toppings including hot celery, jalapenos, bleu cheese, or salsa. The onion rings are thick and crunchy, and each serving is enough to share.

Offering two daily custard choices, you can sign up for "flavor alerts" at www.kopps.com.

Culvers (3705 North 124th Street)

Although a chain restaurant, this Culver's offers a few unique advantages to a "run of the mill" burger joint. Just south of 124th and Capitol Drive, this restaurant offers ample indoor and outdoor seating, including a large patio in the front of the building. The back of the building has a large open area, which is filled to capacity on most warm-weather "Two Wheel Tuesdays" when hundreds of local motorcyclists ride in for burgers and custard. The drive-up has easy-access for convenience.

The Butter Burger is a classic, and leaves no-one hungry. For variety, Culver's also offers a bacon deluxe burger, a mushroom and Swiss, and a sourdough melt. The menu also includes other sandwiches, including excellent Reuben's, grilled cheese, and a beef pot roast sandwich. For healthy options, they offer salads such as chicken cashew, classic Caesar, and Strawberry fields.

Murph's Frozen Custard (12505 West Burleigh Road)

Right up the road from Culver's, Murph's gives diners a small-sized, small-town version of the traditional burger chain. Although both the indoor and outdoor seating area is small, the food and fountain offerings are excellent.

Burgers here are huge and made to order. For lighter appetites, order the kid's size burger. The Pittsburgh-style sloppy fried egg cheeseburgers are not for the faint of heart, as they are topped with a fried egg, cole slaw, tomato, and French fries - all in one sandwich! The cheddar nuggets are crisp on the outside, with cheese melting perfectly on the inside.

Murph's also offers a special flavor of the day, which can be found here: Murph's Frozen Custard
