Top Three Free Study Resources for Medical Students

Phillip Chan
Most medical students learn quickly to use the Internet for quick study questions and test preparation, a welcome alternative from massive, convoluted textbooks. Here are three of my favorite free study resources for medical students, available online.

University of Michigan Anatomy

Known in medical student circles as 'UMish", the University of Michigan Medical School website has excellent cadaver dissection videos, streaming online for free. Also, and perhaps most valuable, is the free practice quiz on each anatomy dissection and lecture topic. These are highly recommended when preparing for any anatomy exam, I know some people that prepare exclusively using the practice questions. They have 32 different dissection topics, from the Eye to the Posterior Mediastinum and even practice crosswords to help medical students master anatomy terms even better.

Wikipedia

While Wikipedia has a rather dubious nature in higher education settings, it is a known fact that many medical students frequently refer to it for quick answers. The accuracy may be questionable, but most will agree that the articles are generally correct. Professors certainly frown on the wide-spread use of Wikipedia for information, but few other websites have anywhere close to the quantity of material available from this great free source.

FlashCard Exchange

There is a plethora of flash card websites all over the Internet but few offer as many options as FlashCard Exchange for free users. With over 21 million flashcards created on FlashCard Exchange, there is truly something for everyone. I have been really impressed with the level of high-quality medical education flashcards in use on this website. However, what I found most useful was the Audio and Visual options for each flashcard, something most other free flashcards lacked. For medical students, the audio option can be a very useful way to learn heart sounds, something that requires constant practice to even come close to mastering. S4, Aortic Regurg murmurs, OS and Split S2s-all these sounds can easily be learned using custom flashcard sets made on FlashCard exchange. I uploaded audio from free heart sounds programs and then made a flash card for each one. In the end, my diligent studying paid off and I was able to excel on a heart auscultation exam.
