Why not check out one of the top independent coffee shops in Blacksburg if you're looking for a fresh coffee experience?

Bollo's Café and Bakery

Bollo's Café and Bakery, located at 206 Draper Road Northwest in Blacksburg, is the closest independent coffee shop to Virginia Tech. It's fairly quiet as far as coffee shops go, making it easy to focus on work. It's also a great place to spend some time with friends, and perhaps play a board game while you're at it.

If you're just getting coffee, you don't have to wait: it's self-serve. Coffee is $1.36 for a small to-go or a house mug with one free refill (not including tax).

Because the food is ready-to-go and the coffee is self-serve, you won't spend much time waiting in line. Enjoy the retro vibe of the black-and-white checkered floor and black and chrome tables and chairs. Just be careful not to trip over the cords on the floor; Bollo's has a somewhat interesting solution to the issue of powering laptops. Come any time between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea

Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea sits a little north of downtown Blacksburg at 700 North Main Street. It's a bit of a walk from Virginian Tech, but worth a visit, if only to see the coffee roasting process in person.

Mill Mountain opens at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, and at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. It doesn't close until 10 p.m., so it's a great place to go for a late-night study break. The coffee starts at $1.35 for a small to-go cup or a house mug with one free refill. The bags of coffee beans destined for the roaster make for great decor. Mill Mountain has several staff members, so you don't have to worry about sandwich orders delaying your coffee.

Note that it's probably not the best choice if you're looking for a quiet place to study; the coffee roasting machine can get quite loud.

Easy Chair Coffee Shop

Easy Chair Coffee Shop is located in the University City Boulevard plaza that also house CVS and the Math Emporium.

The walls of Easy Chair are decorated with coffee bean sacks and for-purchase art. You can sit at one of the eclectic mix of tables and chairs in the front room or in the passage full of used books for perusal or purchase in the back.

The coffee is $1.29 for a small cup (not including tax). The servers are knowledgeable and friendly, and chat with the customers as they prepare drinks and sandwiches. Easy Chair is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Very good local piece. Can you believe that I've lived in Virginia since 1980 but have never been to Blacksburg?
