As great a reason as diversification is there are many other reasons to own mutual funds as well. Here are the top three reasons besides diversification to own mutual funds in your portfolio:
1. Managed by Pro: Any mutual fund that you buy is managed by a financial professional known as a fund or portfolio manager. It is their job to watch over the fund and all the assets within it and make buying and selling decisions in the best interest of all the fund holders. This means that no matter what you are doing, your money is always being watched over and if managed well it will work as hard for you as you do for it.
2. Variety: Mutual funds offer you the opportunity to get involved with whatever sector interests you. Technology, medical, bond, even money markets. Whatever you prefer you can find a mutual fund to fit the bill. Many investors even like to be well spread out in multiple sectors and this is also easily accomplished with mutual funds.
3. Liquidity: Mutual funds are extremely liquid meaning they can be bought and sold at the end of the market day making them very easy to move in and out of. While you cannot sell them quite as quickly as stocks, they do offer a quick in and a quick out if you should need it.
While there is indeed a variety of other reasons that mutual funds may be right for your portfolio, these three reasons just may be the most important. With easy access to a variety of sector that are all managed by professionals, maybe it is time for you to talk with your financial advisor to see if the world of mutual fund investing is a world you should be a part of.
